LEL - Spelling of Lea Valley
« on: 19 January, 2009, 11:36:37 pm »
Most LEL literature seems to refer to Lee Valley.
The YH website is for Lee Valley YH.
Odd, because its by the River Lea.

Googling this knotty problem gets lots of hits.
Apparently there was an Act of Parliament back in, oh, 1760-ish, to enable the construction of the Lee Navigation (the canalised parts of the River Lea).
The 2012 Olympics are to be held in the Lea Valley.

The OS maps hedge their bets, marking a car park in Luton as the 'Source of River Lea or Lee' and staying with this convention all the way to its meeting with the Thames.  However its the Lea Valley Walk, and the Lee Valley Park.

Just thought you ought to know.

As an Essex boy, I've always considered that either spelling is acceptable.

I always assumed it was cos of the Lee Navigation canals rather than the River which would be obvious. Mind you there are loads of now covered up rivers in the area.

It shoul be Lea. The source, at Leagrave, was the "Blockers' Seaside" where the Luton hatmakers took their holidays. Look up th record "Strawplait and Bonelace" by my old muckers Life and Times

I have seen both spellings used on different record drawings for the same site (former Lea (Lee) Bridge Water treatment works. drawings date ~1890 - 1980

I always assumed it was cos of the Lee Navigation canals rather than the River

Canals don't make valleys though.  That's why I think 'Lee Valley' looks odd - since the river is predominantly referred to as Lea.

I think it's about time the Northants and Cambs mobs had a fight about the pronunciation of "Nene".

Out of interest, how did Rolls-Royce say it?

It was a long time ago.
