I have just broken a tyre lever

marna:
and I *still* don't have the sodding tyre on the wheel. *weeps*

I think I'll have to abandon the bike in the office tonight and come and sort it out tomorrow.

eck:
Have you tried something to lube that difficult last bit of tyre to help it over the rim? Washing up liquid or talc.

According to Richard's Bicycle Book, you should never wonder whether that last bit of tyre will go on. You should decide that it will.

Andrij:
I've broken 5-6, all courtesy of Schwalbe Marathon Plus, over two years.    >:(

fungus:
What tyres/rims are they?
I use mavic wheels with michelin tyres and i can usually get the tyres on without levers & off sometimes :)

rogerzilla:
You should never use a lever to put a tyre on, unless it's one of those special VAR devices.

Lots of talc on the tube, coupled with making sure the beads are pushed into the centre of the wheel well, will sort out most tyres.  You can always fit the tyre without the tube using levers, then remove it again, which may stretch the bead slightly.
