LEL - Last Minute preparation, The Pictures.
« on: 23 July, 2009, 11:27:45 am »
Three quarters of a ton of supplies for Alston packed on the back of my ancient Land Rover.

Inventive use of Gaffer tape (Lidl own brand).

Off to Alston now. I may be some time.

I'm quite dissapointed you're not transporting it by bicycle, it's only 3/4 ton, a couple of Carry Freedom trailer loads would do it ... ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

I would have done but for the 1900 foot Hartside climb from Penrith to Alston.

All unloaded.

Base camp established, this is just the heavy stuff and the Plates and stuff, the dry stuff and milk etc. comes later.

Just watched the Tour, off to Circuit Training now.

Yes - its the  control that won the best overall control  from rider feedback in 2005.

Heather has made a few improvements this year and added a tent - luxury or what!

Was it not Heather's Langdon Beck that got best in show in 2005 ? It should have done, it was ACE. Though I never visited Alston that year, LB was so good.

This is what you'll be looking for.

It's called High Plains Lodge.
Which put me in mind of this bloke.

This is what you'll be looking for.

It's a _tad_ late for this LEL, but ...

I reckon it would be useful on big events to post piccies/video of the approach to controls. Quite often the last 1/4 mile is the hardest nav of the flippin' event.

This particular control might be easy to miss if the rider is not concentrating. Going north, it's partway down the descent of Yad Moss so after a long climb it'll be easy to relax on the downhill and forget to look out for it if one thinks that the control ( or forgets that it is not) is in Alston town. There is no large sign announcing the Outdoor Centre either.

Just been down the LBS (Hewitt)  for a few sale or return spares as envisaged by End to End  Record Holder Gethin Butler, here's the list and prices. There are a set of Mavic Axium wheels in both Campag and Shimano, £170 a set is cheaper than a rail ticket. £100 rear £70 front.

Here's the list, all at Alston.

Large size here. Flickr Photo Download: P1000038   We also have some cheaper Vittoria tubes.
