Today, in the work bike storage, my Mixer is hanging between a Lemond Buenos Aires and a stately old Raleigh BSA, still with its original paint job (and original everything else).  Both of them very pleasing to the eye.

Yesterday I was recording University Challenge, which means that when I arrived at work Tom B's beautiful Mercian Fixie (Brooks honey saddle, Carradice saddlebag) was already parked in the sheds*, in amongst a variety of bikes and bike-shaped objects.

He obviously has much better taste than me!  :)

*If he's on the same bike today, I shall take a photo for posterity.

Yes, lovely Mercian - but that bike, in that bike rack... <winces slightly>

Please tell me it's better than it looks.

I like cycling diversity, but the sheds at work are mainly full of identikit modern hybrids. Nothing against the things (they're very practical), and I'm glad people are cycling, but it's just too, too dull-making sometimes.

Mine normally shares a Sheffield stand with a new white Trek MTB that looks as if it could go down Mammoth Mountain.

well, we don't get a choice.  It's that or nothing, or perhaps we'd like to drive in.  ::-)

Indeed, or ride a less good bike when you can ride a nice one. Maybe I'll hang the Merc up on the wall as an ornament and label it appropriately. Liz can come round, take some pics for the forum, stay for tea and buns and we'll all be happy  ;)

Seriously, it's not a bad rack for a narrow-forked bike. Much harder when I come in on the Thorn RT or the Trek

Oh crikey. I wasn't criticising you for putting the bike in the rack - bikes are meant to be used, and I'm willing to bet that Mercian is as nice to ride as it is to look at. I was criticising whoever designed/installed that rack for thinking it might ever be fit for purpose. The beauty of the bike accentuates how awful it is.

Glad to hear it's better than it looks (the rack).
