DIY 600 from MK 25.9.10
« on: 25 June, 2010, 05:35:30 pm »
Me and Steve have done this ride for the last 3 yrs helping a few others from here get the SR's.
I'll* be doing it again this year and will book travelodge rooms for the sleep.
It will probably be on the middle rd route again up to Howden and back via Thame.
Start is from MK at 06.00, all welcome.

*No doubt Steve also  :)

Here's an old ride report to encourage 600 virgins to join Steve & Rich.

600k-novices, that is, not 600 separate virgins, that would block the roads.

Great to read that again - thanks for digging it up.

When I was riding all night behind Rich Forrest I kept seeing him as a large turtle. It was daylight before I  worked out it was a combination of his jacket and recumbent seat that was doing it.

Just before Cromer I managed to hallucinated an entire bus shelter with people sitting in it.

Anyway Rich, Steve - I'm up for this

Hadn't *edit(seriously)* considered the possibility of an SR this year, but having read Julian's ride report I am seriously tempted. How's the route (hilly, main roads etc.) ? Many planning to do it ?

Is there any chance of a floor to sleep on in MK on the night before / after??
I'm missing a 600 for a full house this year.

Sounds interesting... Is it still possible to join your Motley Crew? I feel inclined to give it a go even if I have to ride it on my tourer. Can you recommend anywhere to stay on the Friday and somewhere to snooze after the ride on Monday before driving north to Newcastle for work on Tuesday.

What about the logistics of the ride itself? What do I need to do to join the ride?

Laid end-to-end, Dorothy?

The more the merrier  ;D
I don't know how much of Steves floor space is booked up yet no doubt he'll be along after he finishes his jaunt in Italy.
I'll book a room or 2 depending on how many people are riding, must do that this week.

Rich,

I might be interested in joining you. Like Julian in his report I DNFed my first 600 this year (also the Three Coasts) so I lack a 600 for my SR.

However I am going touring tomorrow (rough route: Maidenhead-Cape Wrath-Maidenhead) and will not be back until the weekend before your trip by which point I will either be

a) in no state to ride due to a collection of niggling injuries
b) utterly sick of the sight of the bike and not wanting to ride until Feb
c) stonkingly fit, battle hardened, and raring to go

There is no way of telling  :P I will bookmark this thread and look it up when I get back. I can arrange my own accomodation if needed.

This sounds like too much fun to miss if you've space for one more on the ride?

Where will your first control be after Milton Keynes? I could meet you there or somewhere else en route (eg. Billing), ride with you all to Howden, back to Thame and then go my own way back from there. It might also make sense for me to just meet you all at Milton Keynes.

So, so far we have

cyclone
simonp
Julesh
AndyH
fungus
aptstarfish
Maidenhead Phil
mikek
marcus
Rich
me

That makes 11, so probably worth booking 3 or 4 Travelodge rooms for the ride. I'll be happy with the floor. With 3 people per Travelodge room, it works out at about £17.50 ppn in a £50 room.

Route is
Middle Road to Howden over to Beverley and back down through Sleaford - Boston - Spalding - Kings Lynn - St Ives. Sleaford being the sleep stop at about 380km.
It'll be a very slow ride. Right on maximum time limit. If you want to ride faster and get more sleep then make sure you know the way. I'll look after the slowest riders.

I have room in my flat for a sleepover before and after the ride. Easily enough room for 3 with a sofabed, fold up bed and airbed. Then it's cushions. 3 is about right in my pigstye of a flat but I could probably manage 5 at a push. Any more and you'd be much better off using the local Travelodge than my flat.
First come via PM, first served for sleeping at my flat

Will book my own accommodation in Milton Keynes for the Friday night.

OK.

If we're booking Travelodge rooms we may need to do it via several people. After the Mersey 24, Sonisphere and Miglia Italia all within a month I don't think I have enough money in my bank account to keep me solvent if I book for everyone after I've paid all my bills! Especially as it's starting to look like we'll be needing 4 rooms which adds up to about £200.

I am not coming. For some reason I had mixed it up with the weekend before. Got two events to run on the 26th. :)

I'm still in but I will break from the group somewhere beyond Spalding on the 2nd day. I need to make my own way home at that point because I do not have time to ride near the time limit and then do the 100k home afterwards, sleep and be in work for 0500 on Monday  :(

Now that some others have dropped out, it looks to me like a maximum of 9. I will book a family room tomorrow unless someone tells me not to.

OK. I'll book a 3rd room at Sleaford, so that should be plenty unless more people join the ride.
With 3 family rooms and 9 riders, we'll all have a bed to sleep in.

Good to see things progressing while I'm at Mildenhall :-)
I should have some diy cards by them also.
