Continental DIY 1000 end of june (PBP Preparation)
« on: 12 November, 2010, 05:20:27 pm »
Nearly all 1000k (and over) events in preparation for PBP are in july or even the start of august. That's a tad late to be well rested for PBP. So I started thinking about a continental 1000 DIY.
Rough outline of the route:

Maastricht-Namur-Révin-Reims-Fontainebleau-Dreux-Compiegne-Maubeuge-Maastricht. That would be about 1015km according to Viamichelin, in reality somewhere around 1050km. The route would evade the worst part of the Ardennes, riding along the river untill Révin.
The route could be slightly tweaked to include a few F1 hotels for accomodation.

Anyone interested?

Might be

I agree on the desirability of something to keep the legs turning at about that time. New territory for me, too.

The plans for such a DIY 1000 are slowly getting clear now. I've selected an easier toute. Planned start on june 18th, probably around noon. Rough route: Maastricht, through the Maas valley to Révin. Turning west from there through the night to Hirson, St. Quentin, Péronne and then following the valley of the Somme to the Bay de Somme. North from there to St. Omer. To the coast with a sleepstop in Calais (F1). From Calais up the coast trough Belgium to the Zeeland islands. Ferry Breskens-Vlissingen. Over the dikes and dams and reaching the mainland again at Willemstad. 2nd sleep stop in Waalwijk before going south again via the Zuid-Willemsvaart to Maastricht. The various programmes give a denivellation of slightly under 4000metres. Anyone in for joining me?

You are made of stern stuff Ivo.  1000 as prep for a 1200 is impressive.  Good luck with the ride.

In preparation of previous PBP's where I finished without problems I rode a 1000 BRM. The year I had no chance at all (dropped out on the way out in Tinteniac) I skipped the 1000. Last time I didn't finish my 1000 BRM and dropped out of PBP on the way back. So for me a 1000k ride is part of the necessary preparation of PBP.
