Tour Divide/Great Divide Race
« on: June 16, 2008, 11:54:07 AM »
The Tour Divide race started last Friday - 2711 (mostly) offroad miles from Alberta to New Mexico.  This is the longer version of the race, spun off from the 2490 mile Great Divide Race, which starts on Monday.

Dave Nice is riding fixed, again.  I really hope he finshes this year.

What use will another fixed DNF do?  :demon: ;)

(Thought I'd save you from three replies to yourself in a row ;D)

Encourage someone to try harder next year? :)

To be fair, seems he pulled out with a cold, hard to see that relates to riding fixed.

There is a UK girl still in there, riding on singlespeed. Go Jenn!

That would be Jenn Hopkins then? Partner of Jo "Mint Sauce" Burt and very, very fast rider.

Jon Billman's report from last year's GDR is online - awesome.

Get out of my bag for a coyote breakfast—a piss and a look around. Stuff my camp into the panniers. Push off. The anxiety and dread quickly give way to excitement and primal drive ...

I'm following one of my favourite US bike bloggers and all round rando heroes, Kent Peterson who's riding it on a monocog.

Kent's Bike Blog

I'm in awe of what these guys and girls are about to do, I really am.  It makes PBP look like a pootle in the French countryside.

Astonishing riding.  Up there with the RAAM as something you know is completely impossible, yet people actually do it.

RAAM and the Tour Divide are the two events I dream about entering.

RAMM = finiancial and speed hurdles to get over.
Tour Divide = I just need the right bike and a load of offroad skillz practice!

One day...

Craig Dolwin
Mike Hall
Aidan Harding
Simon Harling

Paul Spencer
Martin Wimpenny

Aidan Harding, riding singlespeed, has finished at 6am UK time after 18 days and 14 hours, in 6th/7th place (depending on whether you count the northbound riders or not).
It looks like he spent about 34 hours going back to Steamboat Springs from Silverthorne - presumably for a bike shop? He might have come in 4th/5th but for that.

Mike Hall looks on to finish tomorrow morning (UK time).
Craig Dolwin (northbound) will probably be next to finish.
Martin Wimpenny's last Spot report was nearly a week ago, just inside Colorado, so either he's scratched without being officially recorded as such, or his Spot tracker is lost/broken.
Paul Spencer scratched at Rawlins (Wyoming)
The others are all in Colorado.

[edit] it seems Martin did lose his tracker, and last phoned in from Platoro, southern Colorado.
Also that Aidan's delay at Silverthorne was a broken frame
