His idea on the Monday morning free start is an interesting one. I wondered what that was about but it's clear that the organisation have considered quite carefully the sorts of people who take the 84 hour option, and have added this variant to the mix.

The riders will have transponders attached by velcro, which can be kept as souvenirs. There will be two carpets you ride over to register your passage at the start and at controls. That is what enables the 'free start'. The limit to the size of group in that start is 20.
It means that a group of club riders could set off together at a reasonable time. Heather and I explored some of the old starts in Paris. You could set off from a number of significant points, including where Hubert Opperman started in 1931, and ride to St-Quentin to pass over the carpets.
The disadvantage to the free starts is that the finish time is fixed, so the later you set out the less time you have.
