My ride report. The fast group headed out and not a word was said until about 30km into the ride, this proved to be a theme for the ride. Then it rained. There was some wind. It got cold. Damon and Heather opened their home and laid on a great spread. Then it got dark and we kept on cycling until it got light and wet - repeat until the wind starts again. Highlight of the event was 8 sweaty audaxers squeezed into a single disabled toilet in Shap at 4am.

We finished it though and after this other 600 will be viewed as a piece of piss.

You're making me feel very glad that I got round the BCM and so didn't need to ride this one!

On paper it isn't a difficult 600 but the weather an lack of sleep stop made it interesting.

Yes, I hope to ride it at some point in future, hopefully in brilliant sunshine. YLG, is this an annual fixture or just a qualifier?

Quite! Now that the 'you have to be mad' thoughts have receded (a bit) there were some really memorably good bits of this ride; trouble is the gruelling bits - rain and wind, as MercuryKev says, that were really hard to put down to 'all part of the audax experience' without also thinking this is a type of experience you would rather not repeat.

Good bits for me included a fast first leg of the return with a slight tailwind on pan flat ground between Preston and Lancaster, a dry run over Shap on the return with a tail wind at about 1 am and about 4 cars coming past in a couple of hours, an unbelievable tail wind nearly all the way from halfway down the Beeftub to the finish 40 miles away. (Fly in that ointment was the very last 7 miles or so where the route turned back westish into 30mph winds). Not least for me was riding the whole of the return in the excellent company of Richard (not sure if he has a forum persona) whose unbeatable good humour was a brilliant antidote to the hostile environment at times.

Thanks very much to the organising team! Omelette and beans at the end was cordon bleu and Damon and Heather's hospitality at the far end was wonderful and exactly what we needed at the time.

For our group stop at dawn in Shap village the highlight for me was the sleeping in the bus stop. Only managed about a 15 minute doze but it feels like an audaxing rite of passage. Kev insisted we all come and admire the toilet that he'd acquired a key for, but I prefer the simpler pleasures of a good stone-built bus shelter.

Best bit of the ride was reaching the finish - never been so happy in my life to see an Arrivee. Good route, well organised and catered, but the cold, rain and wind combined to make it all a bit of a grind. So bad that it might take me several days from now before I decide that I did really enjoy it and can't wait to do the next one ::-). Big thanks to Graeme for organising, Damon & Heather & friends for the excellent Preston control and to Colin & Sonya for the catering at the finish. Also worthy of a special mention are the lovely people at Carlisle Truckstop, who provided loads of cheap food and didn't mind damp and sweaty cyclists sleeping in their nice armchairs.

just back in from the finsih control

Final audited figures - 56 entries, 14 DNS, 8 DNF, 5 organisers / helpers so 29 finishers today. Just under half the field were 36 hrs + which tells a tale of how tough this was. In a non PBP year I reckon the field would have been decimated so well done to those who did manage round.

Thanks again to Heather, Damon, Colin & Sonya from the ranks of AUK for their "top drawer" involvement and of course Mrs G who provided some home baking at the finish.

Graeme.

My first 600k and what a stoater. A proper audax with hellish weather and very little sleep.

Highlight of the event was 8 sweaty audaxers squeezed into a single disabled toilet in Shap at 4am.

Yup, that was a highlight for me too. I believe there are photies. A possible future Arrivee cover?

The excellent truckers breakfasts , the warm welcome at the turn around control, an ice cream for 2nd breakfast in Moffat and MercuryKev getting chatted up by a drunken couple of Brompton owners in Lancaster city centre were also highlights.

I'd have done anything to avoid those hellish side winds over the last 30k though.

A great 600 to get under your belt. I'd forgotten about the couple in Lancaster. They invited us onto their narrow boat!

Now for some hot 8 audaxer in a disabled toilet cottaging action (L-R: Cyclops, otherdave, Tinez, Valkryie, Bodach, Pingu)

If it wasn't for the company I think I'd've DNFd this one, so thanks to Valkyrie, otherdave, cyclops, mercurykev, bodach & tinez for that (I think ;) ). Thanks also to tinez & mercurykev for lending me equipment when my bodged front light bracket failed (good idea, poor execution)

Another highlight of the ride, apart from those mentioned above, was surely the discovery of a porno mag just south of Carlisle. Whether this provided inspiration for the early morning events in Shap, I couldn't possibly say.

Thanks to Graeme for organising and to Heather & Damon for looking after us superbly in Preston :)

Thanks to Graeme, Damon and Heather, etc. for organising and providing food and shelter; much appreciated.

It is true that the bad weather and grind often wipes out the highlights on longer rides. I'd forgotten the porn mag in a bush moment. It also reminds me that when the group finally started chatting the tone of that conversation was slightly ripe too. The idea of using Grindr to secure audax sleeping opportunities comes to mind :D

Even just 24 hours later the unpleasant memories of this ride are fading fast. It did at times feel a bit more like a lads night out without the booze than a bike ride - exploring the fleshpots of Lancashire, impromptu bike maintenance courses in Lancaster city centre at 1am (even the polis seemed to think we were a bit too mental looking to approach), searching hedgerows and the top shelves of truck stops for intellectual stimulation and finally discovering the Holy Grail of audaxing: a hot-air hand dryer.

My ability to fall asleep anywhere proved most handy as beds were even more elusive than sunshine. I'm sure there was even a sand-storm on Longstone Road at about the point I was wondering whether getting off and walking would be quicker.

Many thanks to YLG, Damon and Heather for the hospitality.
It didn't look at all like that in the photographs

Every event I ride this year has been harder than the previous one. Where will it end? EPE was certainly no exception. 100k/hr gusts of wind and horizontal rain tested me to the limit. A fast ride to Carlisle with Roberto & co had me pretty worn out but i could at least ride on at my own speed over Shap by which point I was almost hoping for a puncture so I could get a train home. Going off course in Preston saw me riding along the bank of the Ribble and eventually needing a machete to hack my way thro' the undergrowth down the embankment from the bypass to the underpass near Damon's abode where a warm welcome and excellent catering awaited. Many thanks to Damon, Heather and the helpers. I hid in the group most of the way back until the Beeftub climb where I lost about ten minuted. The struggle up was worth it for the wonderful wind assisted downhill almost all the way to Edinburgh although there were times when crosswind gusts made me very fearful. Reception and catering were up to the YLG's high standards ably assisted by the Ernsts. Ta to all. After a day's recovery I am almost looking forward to the next one. Anyone up for Campbeltown next weekend! The weather is looking good.

A weekend in the life of a long distance cyclist, the sexy side we want to keep a secret!!!
First step get up silly o’clock and head off to the breeding ground of likeminded species (aka the start control), gather round and spread tales of woe about a ‘front’ moving in while cramming in the final feed before the migration begins.
The big boss man (YLG) sounds the off and the flock ‘click’ in unison and head south for the rich grazing of a mythical place called ‘Preston’
Along the way they fight headwinds, cross winds and tail winds (these usually come after the food stops).
Impromptu stops to try on new clothes and deciding what goes with what weather in lay-bys all over the land, all very tough for the fashion conscious cyclist. In the end we just wear everything to keep warm (and wet of course).
Words of encouragement from people along the route, bon courage, or as it translates into English f’off, a’hole and grow up to name a few !!
Driven on by hunger we reached the ‘Promised Land’ and food a plenty is gleefully accepted. Care has to be taken not to get to close while feeding as similar to a dog a low growl is heard if any attempt is made to remove food from the table
What now? Well to heck with it let’s do it all again, the word is that there is more food to be had on the way back from whence we came.
Of course with this life come the groupies, a man who if he can’t take part heads off in to the wind and rain finding the most challenging terrain to stand and film others grovelling in enjoyment (train spotter of the Audax world??). Not just from this land but from far off shores they come, resting at one of our secret watering holes (AKA Johnstone Bridge services), another needs to take our picture to show his buddies back in Florida - this is winter time? (summer for us we reply).
It’s all over we’ve spurned sleep, worn the same clothes for two days, all of them, shied away from washing now it’s time to go home and tell the loved ones we’ve had a ‘good’ weekend.
Mondays at work are for resting, the boss understands doesn’t he??

Andy, I'm afraid Scottish weather can be like that. I remember crossing the Lecht on June 3 one year when I did my LEJOG and getting battered by an ice storm on the descent.

Well done, anyway!

Good video and Photos. However it would be good if someone could put names to faces for me so I can make a bit of sense of this. I know who Wylie G is, the Ernsts and Eck. Met Edinburgh Fixed at Preston and I think I’ve worked out who Wothill and Bodach are. No idea about the rest but perhaps someone could name the faces in the photos and put me out of my misery.

Names to faces (L-R): otherdave, Valkyrie[red top], Tinez [spoon in mouth], Edinburgh Fixed, Cyclops, Mercurykev[right at the back], Pingu [bearded chap at the front], Bodach.

I combined the two videos and linked to them on Randon, the North American site.
http://www.youtube.com/v/Eph8qOUnM6I&rel=1
I inserted a section with a couple of trains in it, to show the temptation.
They picked up on Leon's flashing tail light, it seems to be a big area of debate over there. They also think that it looks like perfect PBP training. I use my climb of Shap from the North on the North West 600 in 2003 as a calibration point for misery, it stands at about 8.5 and features on this video.

Notwithstanding that I look remarkably cheery in the above photo, I found this to be a savage ride and one of my hardest ever.

I broke a cleat commuting back home on Friday and had to fit replacements the night before the ride. While exercising some care to match the position, I obviously failed as I was suffering with noticable knee pain as early as Moffat on the way south!

Despite progressive deterioration I managed to spin my way to the turn in just 15 hours, which I was very pleased with - touching the fast boys before they vanished into the night. (I can confirm the wisdom of the route choice south of Kendal as I bravely ventured down the A591 instead, but although fast, it was uncomfortably furious even for me.)

The return was hard, although I grabbed three hours sleep at Burton in Kendal services I came to regret this bitterly as I winched, and then walked (the knees literally wouldn't take it) my way up Shap inside a stormcloud. Half an hour was spent inside the red phone box ringing out and putting on every piece of clothing I had with me - any less would have been a mandatory DNF, but I scraped through somehow.

The promised wind backed towards the west and offered no real help on the way up to Moffat, although it was tidy enough from the top of the beeftub.

Massive thanks to everyone at each end for an excellent spread, this is an event I'd do again (in good weather) just to see how fast it could be! :o
