Tapering for PBP
« on: 13 July, 2011, 02:54:28 pm »
Ok so the qualifiers are done & dusted, work has been done to improve speed & I'm keeping the legs ticking over with commuting & audax events.  So when is it best to start taking it a little more easy so the legs are fresh at the start  ???

I'm doing another 600 this weekend (16-17/07), about 300 next weekend then I am cutting down my distance.

The following weekend will be a 25 mile TT, then I'll do a couple of 100-200kms on the last couple of weekends before heading for Paris.

This is based loosely on a schedule suggested in Simon Dowty's book.

Presumably starting at midnight from Hyde Park Corner and via Brighton? Looks like a nice and slow first 100k by Audax standards. I'd be interested to hear your plans for the remaining 500k. Perhaps we can talk over a huge breakfast.......
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

I'm going to try to do a nice long ride on the weekend of the 6th/7th, commute the week up to friday the 12th and then use the car to work the following week until Thursday.  No riding at all from the 13th to the 18th

On Friday the 19th I will have a very short bike ride to the train station, then across London to St Pancras, then Eurostar :)

As Audaxers we should always ignore sports science as the over-commercialised black magic it is known to be.

However:

I think the latest thinking is that you can ride quite hard right upto an event, but your 'taper' period should cut down the hours you ride by (say) 75%. I think - I haven't read any journals for months now, it's probably all changed this season ...

You should do what ever you did previous to the Mille Cymru.  Your form on that was great.

Paul Rozelle has just  posted on Randon his account of doing Ventoux by 4 different routes in one day, 3 days before PBP. One route was a forest track.

and he did it all on fixed, up and down. 4 times.

It's all relative though  :)
