That thought had crossed my mind! It is prolly about time I learned how to build wheels, and also to bake CAIK 
How on earth do you work out what length spokes to order?

It depends on the CAIK recipe.

Very very interesting thread, this. I shall look anew at rhe possibility of an Alfine hub for an expedition bike for cycle camping. The proof of the pudding will, of course, be in the long-term durability, so I shall follow this with great interest.

Unlike the Rohloff, the Alfine 11 does require a small amount of dishing. The left and right spoke lengths are the same, though.

Still, my wheel built up easily. I do not use a dishing tool, preferring to simply flip the wheel in the jig to check trueness.

I've ummed and ahhed about that Pompetamine, still umming. Like the idea that it would fit me exactly the same as my Pompino (which is my most comfy bike).

I thought Einstein's theory of relativity was about showing black bikes are faster, at least that's as far as my understanding goes.

Me neither as yet. I do now have it's black SPD pedals and black mudguards though! It also has a Garmin bracket and a Cateye computer waiting for it.

Actually black is faster -  cos my bike is yellow and it's better to blame the bike than the rider, especially when I get dropped by ladies who are not younger than me.

My order was on hold awaiting the Alfine chainset being out of stock. It's back in now and they are catching up on their build queue.
I got the email today;

A word of warning (not exactly complaint) - do go round your newly built OnOne when you get it with allen keys (and preferably a torque wrench), mine was very dubiously put together.

I will be undoing bolts and things and adding some of my nice anti-seize grease to them before riding it as a matter of course
