Great pics, well done but above all else, I am delighted for you and everyone else who achieved this SR series m'dear.  :-*

It is a series with a fearful reputation but I think that detracts from the experience that awaits anyone who is wired-up to appreciate it. In short,  anyone who can ride a bike can have a crack at it but it takes a different person to actually enjoy the series and what you have achieved will take a long time to both forget and to eclispe.

As for being tough, I reckon 'tough' is a word that does not do the series justice. I suggest the Wessex SR requires a level of determination to unlock an experience of pleasure and camaradie;  contrasted (at times) with feelings that are a mixture of pain/exhaustion and solitude that are all too tricky for me to try and capture in words.

It is one SR definitely worth doing (for a variety of reasons) and the only set of rides I have repeated and really enjoyed although I am sure you can appreciate that having done it the once does not mean that victory is assured the next time. Still, once the collar bone has healed, I shall be following your tyre tracks.

It came through Abbots Ann?  Wish I'd known, that's a little local cycle ride for me (in fact my local post office you appear to be sat outside).  Then past Amport cricket club I see (Amport House across the Oil Seed Rape field).  The white Thatched house is driving me mad....I know it but can't place it.  I've scanned Monxton in Google Earth (my first guess).

Abbots Ann, middle of the night, 1998, pissing down, me with a sodden postcard which was my proof of passage. Memories of my first Hellfire.

Here is my blog post: MyBlog

I'm chuffed to pieces, I'm still smiling and grinning at what we have achieved.  It was an incredible series, in which I finished each ride in 'record' time.  I thought this was going to be my year in a now or never kind of way and it has worked out.

I feel released from the lure to audaxing and am going to take a break.  No more challenges! I see the Russian 1200 in July as a holiday.  And I'm thinking of organising an audax, it's going to be called the Spring Swarm 50km.  I might get it off the ground by PBP year :)

Ahh the mind set of an Audax rider. '1200 is holiday' and 'No more challengers' in the same sentence. Next it will be 'Did a 400 every month just to stop getting bored'.

As long as these long rides are not challengers any more you will be fine.

Well done m'dear, an an excellent blog but I suggest  that everyone who knows you or has ridden with you would have been surprised had you not finished. You are a determined rider and an inspiration to many.

Hmmmmmm.... may I share with you what was said to me (by Phixie) in the manner of kindly correction as I limped, no, grovelled around a flatish 200 in 2008, bemoaning how I had lost my mojo and fitness compared to previous rides "No Hummers, you are as only as good as this ride.."

He was and is right.

From that point on, I have seen every Audax, no matter the length, reputation or past experience of the route, as an adventure.

Yeah...after all it's only a 1200...in Russia....where's the challenge in that?

The Audax Body-Snatchers finally got to Els.

Gosh, I feel like I'm getting my wrist slapped, but you're right, you're right.

Of course every audax is a challenge/adventure, and it's when you take your eye off that you get caught.  I'm saying that I'm treating the Russian ride as a holiday because it has less climbing that the 3D! It is very well organised and has less participants than PBP. I don't feel like I did with LEL and PBP, in that not finishing was not an option.  With the Russian ride I aim to enjoy every single moment, it's the experience I'm after and an introduction into Russia.  Why not do that whilst doing my favourite thing :)

Good grief, not a 'wrist slapping' m'dear and I'm sorry if that's how it came across   :-[

Your post only provoked a recollection of my own experiences of feeling like the King of F***ing Everything one season (after finishing the K&SW) and Stig Of The New Forest Dump the next.

Thanks, Charlie. Also thanks for your support by coming out and taking photos on the ride.
I'm sure you can do it too if you really want. I have posted a few tips on the thread previously, but pm me if you want any advice re preparation. If a 55 year old like me, who does no actual specific training or gym work, apart from commutes, and a few club runs, can get round these rides, and enjoy it, I'm sure most  experienced audax cyclists can do it as well.

Thanks to Swarmcatcher also. Enjoy your Russian holiday - beware I believe the potholes can be large there!

Parky finished at about 5, I found him sleeping like a baby  ;D

I certainly was tired by the end, having missed the night stop near Cheddar together with Simon G. We rode together from Saturday to Sunday lunchtime, which was a great help. A Fish and chip supper down in Exmouth helped us through the night.
