Yikes. He'll only need to do another Porkers  :demon: and he'll be a double WSR in one season (his first SR season). Chapeau.

Looking good for a second run at the Hellfire in September, although I must confess it's somehow more daunting the second time round, when you know what's ahead  :)

...I would do the porkers with you this w/e but i've got stuff to do on Monday, and found coherant thought tricky for a day or two after my first run at it  :) ...and also  signed up for the West Bay and Back on Sunday morning after meeting AndyH on the Hardboiled in the spring, and would like to do that.

will try and pedal out to Poole to join you for the first leg on Saturday, so hopefully see you then. If not have a good ride.

CC Hackney's Yossarian, Sharpy and I completed Porkers in 26 hours last Sunday afternoon and a 'pig of a ride' it certainly is.  We weren't expecting the last leg to be so lumpy.  I must say we found it a bit of a heart breaker after being caught in the worst flood conditions that I have ever experienced and after having decided that the final 2 legs would be easy(er).

Thanks again to andyP for the excellent route sheet - we skipped your food stop but with hindsight, we should have included it into our ride (and would certainly cater for the lack of food options next time).

Well done! - I drove across your route on my way up to the start of Andy H's (excellent) West Bay and Back 200km - i was behind the rain clouds and had to drive through the floods - it had obviously been torrential, and was thinking it must have been epic to be out in it.

That last leg was way harder than i was expecting too: the road from Sixpenny Handley feels high, but never seems to go downhill, even though the finish is by the sea  ???

Ah, did I not mention that.....?  ???

Do you have any Porkers tips?

It is my favourite 400k but I have only done it twice so others may have more to add:

  • In case you start to feel too comfortable sat in the saddle, the final section offers ample opportunity to stretch your legs  :demon:

I have heard said it is named the Porkers because it is "a pig of a ride".

Oh yes, I did.  :demon:

Well done m'dears and I will see you on the 8th.

;D Whilst in the mood for mentioning and reminders may I mention and remind participants of the expected conduct? There are not many requirements regarding permanents but there is one in particular: the brevet card validation deadline is 14 days. Failure to get your card to the organiser before the deadline - no validation  :'( . The more general expectation applicable to all events is that riders will not be accompanied by persons not entered in the event.
Thank you for listening.

Andrew, be careful not to break any records.

Too late!  :) Was putting my brevet cards away the other day, and found a note on it from the organiser of the dorset coast to say that I might have broken the record for the most disorganised start latest finish of the Dorset Coast perm!

...I knew I was cutting it a bit fine when I was planning my June RRTY dorset coast perm ride for Saturday 30th June, but when I told deb at 3.30 on Thursday 28th that was my plan, it seemed I was going to have to start again as we had prior social engagements for Saturday. But as the rest of the day was free, we decided there was nothing for it but to set off there and then, left about 4.30, finished at 02:09.  :)

How completely achievable the series seemed back in January, with months in which to prepare both mentally and physically. :smug:

Now, with the summer of holidays, cheap wine and a lack of cycling receding into distance, there is the cold realisation that you have the hardest (Porkers) and the longest (Hellfire) of the series to complete.  :-[

How exciting.  :demon:

Do you have dates in mind for the Porkers? It is an amazing (if very testing) route, and I'd be up for another attempt before the days shorten too much, if you'd like company as you suffer :)

The planned date is Thursday 28th and Friday 29th September for the Porkers.

You are more than welcome to join us m'dear but it will be cold comfort farm compared to the last time you rode it ad there are no manned tea stops on this occasion.

Yes good luck to you all for the remaining rides of the series. Hopefully there will an 'Indian Summer' by then.
H - Will see you on the 6th sept at the Brentford 'Training' drink, hopefully. I'm sure you will 'enjoy' Porkers again, as you say, its your favourite ride..
The early season wessex series, which 4 of us completed in May, now seems like a long time ago- but i'm so glad I did it, being my most testing, AND enjoyable, SR series to date. Very pleased to be added to the list of honour  :), and hopefully next year others will also attempt these rides for the first time.
