Author Topic: Recommend me some good North Norfolk Coast campsites and/or bunkhouse barns  (Read 173 times)

Funds are low, so the summer holiday will be a jaunt with mates along the N Norfolk coast. I have a route map and it shows campsites, but I'd like to throw it over to the panel for their opinions on which are the good ones for lightweight tourers and which are aimed at the static campers & caravanners. We'll be doing the route from Kings Lynn to Gt Yarmouth - and possibly a night in Norwich, so if anyone knows a good site in Naaarch, so much the better.

TIA

Burnham Deepdale has a good site, but it tends to be oversubscribed. It also has camping barns.

There's one at Stiffkey and another at Overstrand/ Sidestrand that I have used. Reedham Ferry is also excellent. Stiffkey is very popular and when we arrived there was a sign up saying "Campsite Full" but he told us he'd always find room for backpackers/ cyclists.

There is a ferry marked on the OS map, east of Wroxham, that no longer operates (thanks, Govt. H & S regs). Bear in mind that Norfolk rivers tend not to have that many bridges.

Deepdale is a tad over-rated, IMO, but it does have a nice atmosphere and a good pub just up the road.

Bird's Farm in Binham is a small club site with a few caravans but all types of camper are welcome. It's very basic but cheap and quiet.

The Garden near Syderstone is a small but well equipped site. We've stayed there a few times. Like Bird's Farm it's somewhat in the middle of nowhere.

Thank you. Keep 'em coming!

Oh, one (almost) vital stipulation is that any facility should be in easy walking/riding distance of a pub or two...

We stayed at Happisburgh and Stiffkey a couple of years ago.  Both are fairly simple, the pub at Happisburgh is closer. There was some kind of kitchen/staff/management screw up which meant we couldn't get any food there but didn't find out until half eight.  The pub at Stiffkey has a rather spiffey restaurant attached. Jolly nice.

As Mr. Bagger says, they don't turn cyclists away, which might explain why the cycle touring  bit was rather densely packed.
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

I found another excellent pub within a reasonable ride of the Stiffkey site.

I didn't know there was a site at Binham, but I did find the excellent pub with its own brewery. My stoker had crashed out in her tent on that occasion so I rode the tandem there solo and treated myself to a 3-course meal with beer, as it was our last night. Just as I was leaving the pub a chap arrived on foot. "Blimey!" said he, "I haven' had one yet and already I'm seeing double!"

There is a small campsite about 400 yards west of Potter Heigham bridge. It is run by an Aussie guy, has clean okay facilities and he is negotiable on price.

Breck Farm near Weybourne is pretty good & you can have a camp fire too.

There's the Red Hart a mile or so away in Bodham for food & ale.

In Norwich itself I only know of the one near Trowse .
Bingo! That's what I am, a saviour.
A sort of cocky version of Jesus.

Thanks for all the tips. That really helps with the planning.
