What about this in oak ! from a company called Gear Up   http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/accessories/racks/product/review-gear-up-oakrak-bike-rack-11-45415

or if that's a bit too pricey you could make something similar out of scrap wood from skips..........

That looks a bit better. I wonder if it will take tandems?

So are mine... in the one and only downstairs living room  :D

But what could possibly be better looking than a couple of islabikes and the Very Lovely Valencia?  Well, until I get myself an n+1 (possibly even one of those ones with funny shaped bars, perhaps not even black  :o) and V moves into the cupboard under the stairs and the mtb moves into the bike bunker once I've sorted out the back yard of course...

Slightly more seriously - I would look for ease of use and efficient use of space as the priority.  Because not meeting those criteria is what will annoy you day after day if you get them wrong!  Do I remember someone on here having a rather splendid freestanding rack to fit a particular space in their home?

according to my mrs (and i agree to some extent) bikes look like clutter inside the house, no matter how nice they are or how are they arranged. this was one of the reasons we moved out from previous property to the one where all our bikes can be safely kept out of sight. (i still service them in the living room)

Mine used to be stored under the stairs at out last place - fine if you're a cyclist, but my OH (who's pretty understanding) was somewhat relieved when we got a garage/outbuildings at the current house !

Probably not what you're after, but Feedback Sports make some freestanding racks (and a wall rack too):
http://feedbacksports.com/shop/Bicycle-Storage-C4.aspx
 - but they're probably bloomin' expensive new. Action Bikes in Staines was closing/moving and they had to get rid of excess kit - so I picked up a couple of 4-bike stands for 50 quid each !

Maxxraxx do/did some car-orientated racks that will also fit on a wall bracket

Hmm...they only show a 2-up wall unit here, mebbe they've stopped doing the conversion bracket
