Bike storage

LittleWheelsandBig:
Given the cost of house renovations, cheaper bike racks doesn't make much difference.

Set of those n-bike wheelbenders that bike shops use?

Hanging is space-efficient, but not so accessible for smaller users, and doesn't work well with some types of bike (ceiling height may be a problem for tandems).  Might be a partial solution.

All our cycles fortuitously have their own propstands (apart from the trike, which we just lean against the sofa), which means they can be tetrised into the available space without additional hardware.  Obviously not a reasonable option on lightweight racing bling, but might be a reasonable solution for the commuter/tourers in the fleet.

Otherwise, those mini workstands aren't bad if they can be made to fit the bike neatly (not so good on bikes with small rear triangles, eg. folders and suspended mountain bikes).  I used to use mine to park the Dawes in the bedroom of our London flat.

Instructables FTW

Having read LWaB's expanded explaination it fits in with an idea that I have always thought be a goer.  It's basically a bike rack built like those rug display stands you see in carpet shops, with hooks for the wheels instead of hanging rails for rugs.

This would allow you to store the bikes closer together and sort of push them up against the wall.  Finding the bike you want would be easy too, as you just flick through to the right one.  The risk would be damage to frames etc.

Something like a retail display stand?

It might be overkill but they seem very space-efficient.
