Bike storage

I use large plastic coated hooks that screw into the wall to hang bikes by one wheel. I have five bikes stored in the garage in this way. Hooks are about £5 for three from most DIY stores. This may not be satisfactory for you if the bikes are heavy (but shouldn't cause the hooks a problem).

+1 for hanging them on the wall, although not sure how easy a tandem would be to hoist up & down.
I've used 10 quid hooks like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Delta-Leonardo-Wall-Mount-Bike/dp/B000ACAM06/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1332513488&sr=8-3 and they've been great, attached to a solid brick wall with rawlplugs and 8mm ? screws.

I use wall hooks in my garage, too, incuding for the tandem. But the tandem is not at all easy to lift onto the hook (it's an ungainly thing to haul upright!) and the length of ours exceeds the standard (modern) ceiling height. A Victorian property would not have that problem.

This isn't a garage, this is inside our house and I was hoping for something somewhat better-looking and more efficient than standard cheap garage or bikeshop hanging hooks.
I recently saw something (from Topeak?) which hung bikes vertically but the hook/frame was pivoted so the bike was not always perpendicular to the wall. This allowed closer bike placement (space-efficient) while stored and allowed adjacent bikes to be swivelled away to make it easy to place/remove a bike. It looked like the bikes would stick out less from the wall normally too.
