Author Topic: Mille Alba 2012 Helpers Ride - 8th to 11th June 2012 - Entries Close 27th April  (Read 3391 times)

ive just been reminded that Im doing something else tomorrow so wont be out on my bike.

Will post a progress update on the lads after I get back from HQ tonight.  Big pot of lentil soup all made!

Right just went up the A93 glenshee rd from my hoose , Blairgowrie , with the 29er loaded with buscuits and juice.
A few miles up I met 5 of the magnificent 7 with Tinez and wee Dave not present.
They all seem in good spirits and have had a good day .
We had wee crack and then I raced them down the steep bit to Blair.
I recon they should be at HQ about 12.20 ish, which is good for the wind they had in the morning.

That'd be dave and tobias that were missing.

Everyone apart from tobias now back at HQ (dave h has packed).

We'll be leaving fordell at 7 tomorrow if any one plans to intercept.

Good luck guys  I hope the weather's better than what we have here.

The weather in Angus is decent, sunny and light winds, so here's hoping it is similar further south...

Its been warm with sunny intervals and light winds in Edinburgh, though we have just had a light shower.  Im going to do a recce this evening, if they left at 7am I reckon they might be back at HQ between midnight and 1am.  Mind you they were fair scudding through Kinross last night when I  went out to cheer them on!

Im sure Cyclops will post an update before then.

Tinez posted on facebook about an hour ago with a fotie of his busted rear wheel.
A little later he posted that he'd "hot-footed it to Kelso", bought a new wheel and is back on the road.
Somewhere over the rainbow, wi' a pie...

I left Valkyrie, Tinez and otherdave at the Gordon Arms at 6.30. My knee had started playing up again but still managed 260 km just for fun. Bodach was last spotted in Gifford, Ken was seen in Coldstream and El Camp was still fast asleep when everyone else left Fordell at 7.10am. Warm with very little wind but the rain on the ride home was ludicrous.
It didn't look at all like that in the photographs

Thanks Cyclops.

Im assuming hes tucked up in bed and doesnt mind me posting but El Campesino packed earlier today citing knee problems.

Looks like its just the famous five now.  Ive just been out to buy them pizza for supper tonight and it was a monsoon when I came out the supermarket.

Will head out the Lang Whang in a bit to provide some moral encouragement.

Setting off to Bridge of Balgie with xrtim to hopefully meet up and provide encouragement.

We're down to 4 Im afarid.  Ken Morrison came off his bike last night near Kirkliston while riding alone (about a mile or so ahead of the others) and ended up spending the night in St Johns Hospital in Livingston.  Thankfully he is not seriously hurt and has texted me this morning to try and establish how to be reunited with his car (Fordell) and bike (my garage).

Neil, Martin and Dave were in good spirits when I spoke to them when I nipped over to take custody of Kens bike.

It sounds more like a Battle Royale than a bike ride.  Can we start a book to see who the last man standing will be?

Go lads. You are almost there.

Sorry to hear about your accident Ken. I hope you are ok.

The decision to quit wasn't an easy one but I couldn't climb out of the saddle after Braemar because of knee pain. Should have sorted it out after PBP and the Snow Roads last week didn't help either.

The daunting thought of having to cycle 650km on my own helped with the decision making process, though.

And when I saw the weather yesterday ....

I might do this as a perm some time in the nearish future, it's actually quite a nice route.

See you all on the 22nd.

Failed meet up with heroic riders, they must have set off later than we anticipated.  Weather cool and damp but dried up this afternoon so late start makes sense.

I've just popped up to the Firs Scout camp but its deserted. Does anyone know what time the last riders are expected back? The doors are all locked and I only saw a couple of private cars? I don't have Graeme's number.

The latest update is that they have finished today's leg but decided that they're just going to blast through the last 70km and get the whole 1000km finished tonight.

Cheers, any ideas what time they're expected back? Just wondering if there is anything I can do?
@DaveCrampton < wot a twit.

myself and Mrs G looked into Fordell tonight about 22.30 on our way home.

Otherdave, tinez and valkyrie were there.  Turns out bodach had packed this morning with multiple ailments.  The 3 heroes left were in decent nick, valkyrie chipper and tanned, tinez a wee bit tired but happy and otherdave looking like hed just dawdled along from Edzell to Kirrie.  They plan to knock off the final 70km by leaving around midnight and aim to finish 3am - 4am.

Ken and his bike and his car have been reunited.

Calendar riders beware - these a 3 very tough cookies and were telling me that it has been "hellish hard".  This event is no gimme.

Spiffy!

I am looking forward to it Graeme.

I just missed you Graeme, Appologies again for not getting up there this weekend before this evening, I'll make sure I'm there in 2 weeks! I saw the three Stalwarts who remain:

Dave, Neil and Martin.

They look pretty tired and were heading off at midnight as you said above.

Sorry to hear about Ken's accident and the ailments that prevented others from finishing.
I got around to Braemar at about 8:30pm, still with enough time to spare but lacked any enthusiasm for a solo night time ride.
Had a sleep at the hostel then enjoyed a mostly warm, sunny, tail assisted ride as far as Milnathort where it mysteriously became a headwind for the last few miles to Kelty.
Well done to those who finish

We done it. Me, valky and otherdave rolled in together at 04.08.

Well done all!
