Good work everyone!

Sorry to hear about the accident and I hope Ken makes a quick recovery.

I look forward to the ride - though with even more trepidation now.

Well done everyone. Amazing effort to say it was virtually unaided. Hope Ken makes a speedy recovery.

Chapeau, gentlemen.
Truly A Great Achievement TM
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Well done chaps... I am so proud of what you have done!

Gutted that bodach didn't make it, I learned so much from him about the value of short stops and steady riding.

Pity I didn't stay with him going over to Carnwarth....but that will be one of those "what if's" that life is full of.

I'm recovering from sore head, brought on more from drowning sorrows than head injury.

To those doing the real thing in a couple of weeks I would offer the following advice:
Determination can get you through but you also need fitness and some luck....there is no substitute for experience, and I didn't have enough of the last two. Oh, and I'd avoid Casualty in Livingston on Saturday night in the middle of Gala Day season if you can!

Aye, fair play to the four that didn't make it for whatever reason: at least you had the gumption to give it a go.

I have kept my unblemished record of not finishing any event over 600k. Getting dropped every hill wisnae guid for the morale but I did learn to ride on my own for long distances. My rear is somewhat raw due to the rain on the second day. I packed in due to the cumulative tiredness , sore rear and the fact that my pulse was over 80bpm on the morning of the third day which is double my normal. Didn't fancy the prospect of 300k on my own in what looked like poor weather over some high roads again. Not too unhappy about my ride, 700k or so is a fair distance. Thanks to the guys for the encouragement (and beer). Glad to hear Ken is fine.  He was a delight to ride along with.

Very well done chaps - that was not easy.

Ive just been over to Fordell to tidy up and have 2 bidons (as well as Ken's shoes!) in addition to a modest bounty of cake, biscuits, frijj milkshakes and 2 bottles of Stewart Hefeweizen

When you do rejoin the human race, could you let know any suggested tweaks to the routesheet (other than those on leg 1 which I've already captured).  Otherdave was saying something about Aberfeldy IIRC but I couldnt quite make out what was being suggested (if anything).  I'm looking to get the routesheet finalised and e-mailed to riders by this Friday.

bad luck to the 4 who didnt complete, Im only sorry that its not possible to grant points in respect of the distance actually ridden.

Huge congratulations, Tinez, Valkrie and otherdave - I'm so pleased to hear you completed this scary monster of a ride and am in awe of the guts and toughness it must have taken to get through it.
My commiserations to bodach, audave, El campesino and ken, but as we now know this ride is hard by any standard.

All very sobering thoughts for those of us preparing for the calendar event.

Well done to the finishers  :D Bad luck for the DNFs.

It'll be interesting to hear what you think of the route.

You know you've done a long ride when you sit at your PC for half a day and can't work out what to write about the ride :-[ . I've got that pleasantly dazed feeling that only a really long ride can give. But here's some random thoughts anyway -

It's a great route. Lots of places I've been before, but a few nice twists and just being on a longer ride makes it feel different - you know, sitting in Galashiels in the sunshine thinking "this time yesterday I was in Braemar". Also good to hit familiar roads at different times of day, though I have to say that Cairn O'Mount after 150km felt an awful lot harder than it did just the week before, when we'd only a nice wee warm-up before it.

Spent some time on the bike thinking about how the scenery would look to visitors who don't know Scotland that well. I think Graeme has done us proud on that front, there's lots of tremendous scenery. Deeside is looking great just now, the Lammermuirs had great open vistas, the Eastern borders lots of lovely villages, the central borders some great hills. Loch Earn was looking good but I think Ben Lawers and Glen Lyon will probably have the greatest visual impact. The Lawers climb from Loch Tay is pretty brutal at the start, but higher up it zig-zags a bit so you get plenty opportunities to look at the view.

It's a hard route. Ever day features a number of big climbs/descents, so groups can easily get split up, then flat sections where you're at the mercy of the winds and could do with being in a big group. We had mostly beneficial winds and still found it tough. If there are serious headwinds on the calendar event I think a few folk will end up either out of time or just knackered. I don't think I'd have got round without Tinez and OtherDave keeping me company and doing more than their fair share of the work.

Good of Tim to meet us outside Blairgowrie with biscuits and juice. He was coming down hill towards us when we saw each other, at which point he veered across to our side of the road and stopped. I spent a few seconds thinking "WTF is that big guy on the mountain bike doing" before I realised it was Tim. Never seen him on an upright before. Braemar to Fordell is quite a long way but Tim's digestive biscuits gave us a great wee boost - didn't even need a meal in Perth. Shame we missed Tim & Martin B in Glen Lyon, they were a tad too optimistic on how fast we'd be going.

Martin F joined us in Musselburgh for the Saturday section of the ride - fresh company and local knowledge for the routesheet checking. I suspect he might have set a new record by riding almost 300km of a ride he'd DNS'd. We stayed pretty dry for most of the ride, but Saturday evening was when we eventually got caught by the stormclouds. Massively heavy rain for a couple of hours then it cleared again. Pretty cold for June. Coming out of Kirkliston on the way back to the control we saw Phil & Ken at the side of the road with a car. Ken had crashed and seemed a bit dazed, so we all hung around while the ambulance came. Once the paramedics decided to take him to hospital I called Graeme and we waited a wee while for him to come get the bike. We'd had a good run up the Lang Whang so it was a bit of a downer to see another cyclist getting carted off to hospital. But he's fine now and that's the main thing.

The climb from Braco over to Comrie was made interesting by a marathon being run in the opposite direction. Spent so much time saying hello to runners that I almost didn't notice the climb at all, it was really painless. Breakfast in Comrie was the highlight meal of the event, with the Pizzas supplied by Graeme in the hall a close second.

The wee sting in the tail (a 70km loop up to Falkland) was started at about 11.30 last night and finished at 4am this morning. A cold, dry night with very little wind, we took it gently and had a very mellow meander. OtherDave almost had to pack with a failed free-hub at 30km to go, but luckily after a few km of riding "fixed" it started working again. This morning it was free in both directions so it could have been much worse.

I'm clearly just rambling now so I'm going to stop. Good night all.

I wish I could ramble as coherently as that. That's a really good report, Mr valky. Well done to the three of you.

nicely written, well done once again
@CorbieLinnRider

Great effort from all 3 of you.
So this makes it over 50% DNF rate. Gulp!
Mind you, I always thought that helpers rides were more difficult than the calender events so lets hope a higher proportion finish the main event.

Valkyrie, I hope you asked him if it was Shimano?  :demon:

To be honest, a certain lack of motivation caused by the ‘I don’t really enjoy doing this on my own’ was an important contributory factor for those of us who packed.  With hindsight, better communication may have helped to avoid, or at least lessen, this problem.

Because of the larger field at the main event, this should be less of an issue and most participants should find others to ride with; particularly at night and when riding through the freezing horizontal rain on the windswept Scottish moors.

  • It's mostly downhill from here.
The tales of derring do make me fair scunnered I've not signed up for this ride.

At the time, I thought it was beyond my reach.
But now I wish I'd given it a go.

Well done to all so far, and best of luck to all on the day.
I've never tested positive for un-authorised tea.

I will never understand why you gave up stronglight????

Well done to everyone who took part in the helpers ride, sounds like it was a hard shift for all and in the best audax tradition tales of poor weather, mechanical failure and an unfortunate visit to casualty.

Wish I was able to join you but alas things have conspired aginst me this time :'(

Cheers
