Anyone have any experiences with a cat with FIP?
marcusjb:
Thanks feline
We are awaiting a couple of new tests, and should have goes results tomorrow.
James the vet is more positive about things currently. Scovie had a lot more fluid around his lungs again, and James planned to treat everything as if it were infected pleuritis (his current hope/thought). Anyway, long story cut short, his operation (chest drain to go in for a few days) was postponed a day, he went back in and he has absorbed the vast majority of the fluid!
So hopefully scovie is getting on top of whatever infection and is now being helped along with huge numbers of antibiotics.
He seems well currently, eating well, pretty alert and active.
Fingers crossed for clear results tomorrow.
Poor chap. But I will take infected pleuratis over FIP any day.
Mrs Pingu:
Fingers crossed here, good to hear he's looking a bit better though.
Steph:
My ex and I had a number of cats, and we took on a farm kitten, Ollie the ratbatcat. We were just getting him socialised when we noticed 'floaters' in his eyes. The vet diagnosed FIP, and, well, we had no choice. What hurt was that he had just begun to join in with us and the other cats, just began to get a life that didn't involve sleeping in a shed.
marcusjb:
He is hanging on in there.
Still no official diagnosis, but one test result arrived today, the final one tomorrow. The result of the one test swings things back towards FIP. :(
Poor chap has been through it all. The fluid keeps building up in his lungs, it's being drained off and, once, disappeared of its own accord. He is on masses of antibiotics on the assumption it is not FIP and is infection of his pleuritic bits and bobs.
Very stressful. If FIP is diagnosed tomorrow it will be awful.
Either way things could get expensive for us soon. He's worked his way through about 2.5 grand so far. Insurance cover is 4k. If he is referred up to hospital (if it is not FIP), we could be looking at 4k!!! Meaning a 2.5k hit for us. I don't think there will be any n+1 this year (and holiday plans might change!).
Poor little chap.
Feline:
Oh noes, that's a worrying turn of events. Hope the next result is a good one. 4k can turn out not to be enough insurance for complex long lasting medical conditions, which some of my clients find out the hard way having thought they were fully insured for every eventuality. There's a worrying trend for online insurance competitors to offer only 1 to 2k cover for reduced premiums these days, which is really poor VFM when you compare what you get for the money with the better providers. I currently have my dogs insured but not my cats, which is a bit of a gamble on my part but I would borrow the dosh for my cats should it become necessary. As a general rule cats are healthier than dogs, but that never helps you to know when you are the unlucky one :(
