Anyone have any experiences with a cat with FIP?

Jaded:
We first noticed him being a bit listless, then off his food. The tests took a little while, as you are finding. It was a case of eliminating other causes.

He deteriorated rapidly after being off his food. So we had the one way trip to the vets, before he got too distressed. Very sad, more so, I'd say, than an older cat where we have been ready for the end.

The feedback we got from the vets was that there was little that could be done. So sad.

marcusjb:
Thanks Jaded and it is so sad.

I have my fingers crossed it will be something else - but it seems very unlikely currently.

marcusjb:
Results of recent tests are 'contradictory'. So I have agreed to another couple of tests at some insane ammount of money.

Main suspects are still FIP or infected pleuritis.

He is in next week to draw more effusion off his lungs and see what bacteria are in that now.

Poor lad. He looks well though, eating well etc.

Jaded:
Well, fingers crossed. Eating well is a good sign.

Feline:
Sorry to hear about this Marcus. FIP is incredibly difficult to diagnose (except by post mortem) and has such variable signs it looks like many other diseases.

The main problem we have is that blood antibody tests cross react with other (harmless to cats) coronaviruses. These viruses normally cause a self limiting diarrhoea, but with the nasty strain of it in a few susceptible cats their immune system goes into overdrive trying to fight off the virus and a massive inflammatory response starts up which causes the body to basically self destruct. Many many treatments have been tried for FIP, but unfortunately by the time the cat is showing symptoms it is too late for drugs to help much. Once signs are seen it generally isn't long before things progress to the point it isn't fair to go on. Fingers crossed it isn't FIP your feline has.
