Moors and Wolds 400
« on: May 10, 2012, 05:25:00 PM »
Hi  All,

Just a shameless plug for the Moors and Wolds 400 starting at Alfreton on the 9th of June.

This is a "relatively" flat ride and makes a good intro to longer distances/night riding.

We are also running a 50k ride (audax) just before the 400 k if anyone needs a longish warm up session

I may well be riding this now & I think I've already entered  :-\  Can't really see me doing the crackpot & mille Alba in the same month + I'm running out of holiday  :(
Still fancy a crack at a hilly 1000 later in the summer though.

I wont be riding this.

This is NOT because of my experience riding it last year. Honest.

It's because I wont be healed enough for a 400km that goes over the Howardian Hills and the Wolds.

Honest.

I have resisted refering to your most excellent ride report on last year's ride

I'm sure if you re-posted it would provide a unique insight into the world of audax

still makes me chuckle  ;D

I'm putting over 4000 miles of salt water between me and the ride this year.  Again, nothing to do with last year.........

I take it that the salt water isn't the "sweat type"

9th June... that was when I was going to ride to Morecambe.  But can't, because The Elbow isn't up to it.

Hmmm..... Any interest in an afternoon tea by the Duck Puddle in Stamford Bridge by CrinklyCatering?

I seem to remember that last year I got there just after the first few had passed thru (the Rapha boys, iirc) and shortly before ChrisS and fboab (who was remarkably chipper, this being before the boab-word was required) appeared, and that I hung about for a couple of hours and saw the lanterne rouge on their way.  But really can't remember what time that was....

I must admit it is quite a few years since I rode this event, but unless the route has changed, the climb out of Staxton, together with the Devil's elbow on the Elenith, are hills where I was forced to walk.   But it may have been due to my lack of climbing ability since I believe Toothgrinder rode up it on about 134 inch fixed!

Comments such as "flat" and " relatively flat" relating to a ride with 2425 metrs of climbing allow me to wonder what a flat ride really is.
The appeal of this ride for me lies with 1430 start & night riding.

Our local 200k has more than 2425m, and it doesn't even get AAA points! So yes, for a ride that isn't boring A-roads across fenland, it is flat.

Forget the published climbing figure.

Here's my GPS track from last year: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/257589

Over 4300m of climbing. Considering that, from 50km to 150km is almost completely and utterly flat, the rest is pretty relentlessly rolling. Except for the Howardian Hills - which are decidedly hilly. Oddly enough.

ETA: Just checked the metrics again. Over SIX HOURS stopped. Tourist mode!

That climbing figure is a lie.

This ride has vast stretches of flat bits- lumpy out of Alfreton, flat as a pancake up to Stamford Bridge, over the Howardian Hills, over the moors, over the wolds then flat as anything till you're back in Derbyshire.

AUK website claimed 2425m, whereas my GPS recorded 4870m - and it certainly felt more like the latter.

The 4800 figure was the raw number in the Garmin - that RideWithGPS saw fit to downgrade to 4300. Whichever, it certainly ain't 2450!  ;D

I will be riding the Moors and Wolds to hopefully complete my SR and qualification for the Bavarian 1200. I have ridden it several times before as I live locally. For me the toughest aspects are that you have to ride through the night due to the 1430 start and the climb of Staxton comes at a time when most riders are at a low ebb. No doubt I shall be searching for a convenient bus shelter shortly before dawn, but these are few and far between on this ride.

Most of the bus shelters between Driffield and Beverley seem to have bikes propped up outside and legs sticking out of them.

I'm on this again this year because I think there's a really nice ride in there, just happened that last year it was hidden behind the wind if I remember and because I've done no Alfreton rides this year and feel like I can once agian cope with the ride back from Rosies.

I really like the later start, no messing around trying to get somewhere for 6am or the expense of staying in a travelodge (for me anyway) just straight in by train (if they're running) and back at the right time of day for a train back in to Nottm. if not all the way home.

I think I'm going in early-ish though to ride on the 50 with the boy.

I used the 24" gear up Staxton Wold !!!
Still finished in time.
A good ride with easy to navigate night section.
Not fast, just furious.
