In March I actually posted him some poles back he repaired last year which snapped again on first use and had been wondering why I didn't get a reply, poor fellow.  I have a Base Camp of his which I used to use on holiday in France year after year, I just got a replacement flysheet done in time 2 years ago, and for backpacking a Lotus that despite being 20 years old I wouldn't swap for ANY new model now, it has always worked so well.  I'll write a lovely letter of condolence, and briefly mention at the end that if they could consider at least returning the poles ... ;-)

A ripe old age. I didn't know the company had ceased trading. Great designs.

I worked for him as a Saturday job back in the early seventies. He was certainly forward thinking with some radical designs. That was in the days when his factory was in his garden! Great guy. R.I.P.

Yes, this is sad news, and all the sadder if it turns out to be true that the company has ceased trading (surely there's someone who can keep it going?). I'm lucky enough to own two Saunders tents, and I shall be taking my Spacepacker Plus with me when I set off across France & Spain later this month. I have thought about whether or not to upgrade it but, really, I've found no reason to. That's quite a testament to a design that has been going for so long.

Agreed he was a great innovator and a forerunner in the design of modern lightweight tents. Sad loss.
