I made one that shape out of some cheap pine, using a large adze (just because).

They work really well - scrape like a spatula, stir like a spoon.

Just make sure you make it the right way round if you're other-handed.  The ones in shops are always round the way wrong for me.  ::-)

Then scrape out the corner on the other side of the pan ???

It's not really useful for scraping out corners, but gives you a flat edge to 'rub' off stuff that is starting to stick on the bottom of a pan.

Well, you learn something every day.

I note that Tesco calls it a "corner spoon" - I think "spoon with an ear" is better.

More spoons!

Julian and I have our tickets for Spoonfest and I'm also booked on a course with legendary Swedish carver Fritiof Runhall...

Do you really need 3 days at £200+ to learn to carve a spoon?

I could understand if it was say building a chest of drawers, or making a guitar, but a wooden spoon?

I would put making a wooden spoon slightly above sharpening a pencil with a knife.

No, of course you don't need a three day course to learn to carve a spoon.

I could understand if it was say building a chest of drawers, or making a guitar, but a wooden spoon?

Yes, a wooden spoon.  I would imagine that three days wouldn't be nearly enough to learn the techniques required to make something as complex as a guitar or a chest of drawers.

I would put making a wooden spoon slightly above sharpening a pencil with a knife.

Then you've clearly never attempted to make a beautiful, hand-carved wooden spoon  :P

The guy who's teaching the masterclass that I'm attending has been carving all his life and he says he's still learning.  Everyone who's going knows how to carve a wooden spoon, but this is a course designed to help us become even better at what is a very subtle art.

You might think that.  I could not possibly comment.

I carved the first spoon I'm really happy with over the weekend.  It's not up to Charlotte's standards but I'll happily use it to get pickle out the jar.

The demise of a national type identity can only be considered a good thing, insofar as it concerns the Third Reich.
