Trap Bikes
(1/1)
Perky:
A couple of weeks ago I noticed outside Watford Town Hall a sign saying "Thieves Beware Police use Trap Bikes in this area".
Seems they haven't stopped there; on Monday this week there was a BSO leant against the Sheffield Stands outside Sainsbury's, with the front wheel removed and propped up against the wall a foot or so away from the bike. The bike (trap?) is especially new and sparkley, unlike the hoardes of BSOs normally seen around Watford, with some bright red and gold anodised appendages on the rear shock... NICE!.
No sign of a lock anywhere but (and I'm guessing to thwart a would be thief) the pedals have been removed.
I reported the status of the bike to the Customer Sevices staff on my way out the shop on Monday and they said they'd go and check it out. Well, no sign of them doing that in the ten minutes it took me to load up the bike (I'm still at the cardboard boxes and string stage), so off I rode.
But then today the BSO is still there, same unlocked state, same wheel resting on the wall.
I studied the occupants of the parked cars looking for Bodie and Doyle types lurking in a Capri Ghia but not a one, no snippers on the roof of Iceland, nothing.

I saw that too! I was shopping- when was it- Wednesday evening.
I couldn't work out what was going on there. It lasted a couple of days then. I'll check for it next time I need to get some cat food.

Perhaps I'll nick it. It'd be handy for those local shopping trips when I can't be arsed to lock the bike.

I saw something on the goggle box in the hotel yesterday.
They are fitted with a GPS so that the police can trace where the bike has been and where it is. One of them was stolen within 8 minutes.
They were asking people to keep their eyes out for a load of downhill mountain bikes worth about £5000 each from the Chain Reaction proffesional team.
I think they'd be better off looking for the components, which would generate more cash and be less tracable than complete bikes...
Palinurus:
Rode past on the way home from work. Still there, wheel and all.
On the way I noticed that there's an unlocked Apollo MTB leaning against the Sheffield stands outside the Library.
....
Well I had to go out today as well (Saturday). Still there, wheel gone.
The bike outside the Library was gone.
....
Back for more cat food Wed 20th and it had gone.
