Rowing Duck

(1/2) > >>

clarion:
In the teeming rain on our way back from Whitstable, we stopped off at Otford, which has a pond on the green, with a duckhouse, long predating any MP's.

One of the ducks on the pond we were unable to identify, even after referring to books at home.  It was quite large, mainly black, but with red on top - I think it was head and neck, but I'm not entirely sure (it wasn't great birding weather).

The significant characteristic of the bird was that, as it swam, it moved its head backwards and forward in a rhythmic motion, a bit like a walking pigeon, only a larger movement.

Any idea what on earth this might be?

clarion:
A bit like that, but more animated.

Cudzoziemiec:
Sure it wasn't a moorhen? They have that bobbing head and neck motion.

clarion:
Rather bigger than a moorhen.  We have them (and coots) on the pond at Carshalton.  But a similar kind of thing, certainly.  I'd have said it was a bit bigger than a mallard.  And I have a feeling the whole head was red.
