Route Planning
Lady Cavendish:
Hello :)
Last year I did a LEJOG on my lonesome and loved it. I used a little green bible, cicerone I think which had the route in it, and I went that way. It was the best 10-11 days.
So I'd like to do something a bit similar this year, but I don't have quite as much time.
I'm thinking about getting a train to Edinburgh, and riding home, mainly along the east side/seaside in the North bit as I was on the wessssstsidddde last year.
I'm ok with A roads in general, but I don't want to accidentally encounter any of those ones where you are almost on a motorway and feel you shouldn't be there!!
I just went to start a route and Edinburgh down to kind of Jedburgh then the Northumberland National Park bit is A68- is there any good way of knowing how busy roads like that are. A lot of my lejog took in A routes, but as they were in a cycle guide I knew they'd be ok. Just a random route I plan myself I could put myself on the busiest A road ever!!
Any tips? :)
Lady Cavendish:
(Home is Berkshire btw....)

See if you can find a route sheet for London- Edinburgh - London. It may have some useful hints for the southern half.
Otherwise Enjoy
MrToad:
You're probably already doing this, but I look at the satellite imagery (eg google/bing maps) of A roads when planning a route. That can give you an idea whether it's a whacking great highway or just a big road. Google also have streetview too so you can "ride" round junctions that look a bit dodgy. Not as good as local knowledge, obviously.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.
Lady Cavendish:
No that is a good tip, thanks :)
