There's a North Sea Cycle route but no idea what it's like.

From Harwich to Edinburgh, it's NCN1.
'nuff said.

and if anyone has successfully managed to negotiate the route past Haswell in County Durham (the birthplace of Tom Simpson) without ending up in either the bog, the quarry or the waste tip, I'd love to know. I've failed on several occasions. ???

Which makes hardly any sense between Berwick and Edinburgh because NCN76 runs along the sea and avoids any big climbs, unlike the NCN1. The NCN1 between Berwick and Holy Island is Hard Work, because it is very unpaved. I rode it on my way back after Mille Alba to Newcastle. On the way out I took the A1 on that bit because I found I wasn't making enough progress. In hindsight, this was a very good idea, not at all influenced by any knowledge of how the NCN1 looks there.
