I believe the AirBook with intuitive interface, high resolution screen (but not a retina display) flash memory, USB and SD slots, the ability to plug in a 500GB portable HD matches your ideal solution wishes apart from the retina display and your complaint about Apple's pricing of flash memory.

If you want a tablet then go for a Xoom, they are much cheaper and take microSD cards and (IIRC) can act as USB hosts

16Gb iPad 2 can be picked up new for around £260.
There's no point complaining about memory capacity on an iPad. That misunderstands its purpose. The iPad is designed to supplement your home computer while on the move, not to replace it.

I held out for a brief age in the hope that the iPad 2 would deliver a SD slot or USB port because I figured I would need one. It didn't, of course, and I finally bent to the will of the Infinite Loopers.
Sum total of the times I've needed a SD card slot or USB port? Zero. The camera connection thing works on the fly if you want to get pictures from a card to the iPad.
I have the 64 GB 'new' iPad, and even with my entire music library, every digital picture I've ever taken (and that's several thousand), and several movies (and I just load the ones I want), and assorted app crud, there's a 20 GB vacant lot.
I don't think Apple much care about the memory thing – after all, they could sell special Apple SD cards for about ten times the usual price. Their vision is the cloud thing, all the little bytes float around up there until called upon to take up transient residence in your device. I reckon they're right about that.

You can get storage space on the go with an iPad by getting a WiFi enabled had disk. Not sure how you'd get images on to that disk, but I'm sure it is possible.
An ultra book of some description seems a better bet, seeing as photo editing with your finger in the way is difficult.
