What is the collective noun for broken spokes?
« on: July 08, 2012, 01:49:47 PM »
In the current climate, I'm tempted to use "deluge" as "visitation" has already been taken.

After several years without, I have suffered 3 broken spokes in ~150 miles over the last 10 days:

1) Drive side spoke on a "factory built" Roval Fusee - I attribute this to the aluminium hex nipples which are all showing aluminium oxide like powder around the spoke threads and several are fused (on a Fusee, gettit? :) )

2) Front spoke on a lightly used, one year old Harry Rowland 28H Ambrosio hub/Excellight with Alpina spokes at the spoke bend

3) Non-drive side rear spoke on the same set of Rowland but 32H Alpina/Ambrosio/Excellights also at the spoke bend

#2 I can put down to the rider's excess weight and enthusiasm but #3 puzzles me, I'm starting to wonder if the spokes come from a faulty batch

Dare I ride again?  Time to hide some spare spokes in the seat post?

I've broken one spoke, ever, and that was on a cheap Halfords 27" wheel.  I used to carry spare spokes but don't any more; I've always found DT Competition to be completely reliable if built tight.

The only spokes I've broken were on a BSO wheel.  One drive side failure due to me being lardy and it being a BSO wheel, followed by another four in my attempt to get the freewheel off (at which point the whole lot went in the bin).

I'm generally of the opinion that a couple of extra spokes make good insurance, and that the most convenient place to carry them is between hub and rim.

I do carry spare spokes on my touring bikes.  The Streetmachine has unusual sizes that a typical LBS simply won't have, so has a set cable-tied to one of the rear rack stays.  The Dawes has a couple strapped to the seat tube.  So far, they've only been used as burglary tools when I got home to a b0rked door lock.  I reckon there are likely to be situations on tour where a stiff bit of wire is likely to come in handy for something other than its intended purpose, too.

As for collective nouns, I favour 'clusterfuck'.
With regard to wood not being straight, what do you expect trying to make things out of a dead vegetable!

I managed to break at least 20 spokes on a BSO wheel over a 6 month period. Really  I should have sent it back when it arrived with pressed-steel v brakes that would have worked better if they were made out of soggy play-doh. I also broke *both* brake cables on that bike - the cabbie who'd pulled across in front actually apologised! The chain also snapped. It wasn't until I broke the (steel) handlebars that I conceded I might live longer if I bit the bullet and forked out for a brompton.

I broke a couple of spokes on a good hand-built wheel in Scotland, but it wasn't that surprising, the road was like riding over a cattle-grid for 20 miles non stop.

A "buggrit!" of broken spokes
This isn't just a 1000/1 shot. This is a professional blood sport. It can happen to you. And it can happen again.

It's almost true that I have broken more Rohloffs than I have spokes.
