KTTR take 3 - North York Moors social ride, 22/09/2012
« on: July 23, 2012, 11:30:18 AM »

Anybody fancy this again? It's a well-established route by now, a flattish 10-mile run from Yarm to Great Ayton, a hilly 30-mile loop around the Moors with a pub stop, and the same route back to Yarm. A start in Great Ayton is also possible.

Last year's ride was here: http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=47802.0

It's not an easy route, but we've never been quick about it, so all welcome. It's a beautiful, quiet route through the Moors, crossing several valleys up to Blakey Ridge, the wonderful downhill swoop of Little Fryupdale, and a few more hills on the way back, though they're mostly gentler than the way out (with a couple of serious exceptions). We are mostly riding close to the Eskdale railway, so bail-out options are available, even if the trains are a bit infrequent.

The route is here

For anyone overnighting, the camping barn at Kildale is close to Great Ayton, or Great Ayton and Yarm have a few B&Bs.

Meet at Yarm Station, 9.30 am, Saturday 22nd September 2012

22nd would involve some pretty big favours.  I'll see what I can do...

It's on the calendar now.  That's a yes from me and a yes from daisyhill.  I'll be trying to persuade #1 daughter to come along, although my powers of persuasion with my kin are low.

By the way, does anyone have any experience of this road/bridleway between Castleton and Commondale?

http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=468122&y=508760&z=120&sv=468122,508760&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=702&ax=468122&ay=508760&lm=0

It misses off a bit of the climb, and the hairy descent of Sandhill Bank, so it looks potentially easier, but I don't know what the surface is like. I do like the airy, endless skies up Three Howes Rigg, mind, and I don't really want to miss that, but some people might appreciate an easier option by that point.

I know that route, ridden it twice, once in the dry on a tourer and wished I hadn't, once on a MTB in the deep mud.  There are stones, rough surfaces, steep offroad-esq climbs - fantastic fun unless you've brought the wrong bike.

I don't recommend it.

Rather than head up to White Cross and down Sand Hill (which is a tough ask), how about going a little further through Castleton and taking the right to Commondale Moor.  That road surface is lovely and the route is very pretty.  You have to get out of Castleton, but the climb is much easier than the climb to White Cross.

Cheers! I'll scratch that off my list.

I know that route out of Castleton - it is a bit easier, so we'll see. I do like that ridge..

Rower40 and I rode that in January.  I was on the hybrid with Marathon Winters, and had no trouble (indeed they were awesomely grippy).  He was on the Orange Bling with road tyres and found the initial descent quite iffy.  It's mostly firmly set railway ballast size stones, with a bit of mud and loose gravel in places, but no shark infestation (though plenty of badly-positioned sheep).  Heavily rutted in places, and while the sign suggests it's open for wheelchair users, I think you'd need insane amounts of optimism to take a multi-track HPV of any flavour along it.

Cyclocross tyres or liberal use of the 24" gear (or a Landrover) recommended.

I'd love to join you, but I'll be cycling across Italy that day.  What a shame.

COR is much more fun when it's hilly.     :demon:

Yebbut I'm a fenlander.  Anything with a "1:n" downhill gradient (where n<100) is always iffy.
The other specific weather-related issue with that path was bright sunshine on wet stones (or were they whetstones?).  Very unlikely for there to be sun in September...
You might think that.  I could not possibly comment.

Put it this way Phantasmagoriana, I only walked a tiny bit last year. And am seriously contemplating bringing a 10 yo on a road bike. And LindaG rode it on her fairy fart lightweight bling once.

After reading all the above caveats, have a look here with appropriate zoomage.  That's my tracker's recollection of where Kim and I went, and it would suggest that we took only 15 mins or so to cover the section from one station to the next, with speeds in single figures (mph).  So walking it would only take half an hour.

It doesn't show the sheeps' positions thobut, so I wouldn't use this brand of technology for collision-avoidance.  Unless the local farmer has fitted them ALL with trackers in the last year.
You might think that.  I could not possibly comment.

Btw, I don't think you should change the route at all.

Because it is perfect as is.  So nurr!

Well, I don't really want to change it, either, but that lane has always looked so promising from the Castleton end.

..We could include it on Phil's night ride instead?
