That special place you always want to return to
« on: August 02, 2012, 11:37:14 PM »
I spent a couple of hours today at what I think is my favourite of all, Rhossili bay. Dez and I spent at least an hour in the water and then watched the tide come in. Just as everyone else had left the beach, apart from surfers and a couple of anglers, I had the opportunity of a skinny dip.

The waves were fantastic today. Sometimes big enough almost to knock you off your feet, at others just fun to dive into, Rhossili is a place of tumultuous roaring noise. In all the times I have visited Rhossili over the past 53 years I don't remember seeing the tide as high as it was today.

As we climbed the hill back to where we had locked the bikes, we both kept stopping and turning just to watch for one last time. Every time I've left that beach, I've vowed to go back. For me, there's nowhere quite like Rhossili. I think it's summed up by the word "hiraeth".

Rhossili rocks.  Dr RJ and I had a grand day out on the Gower a few years ago with my dad, that included kite-flying on Rhossili beach - his first go with a six-foot, two string sled kite.  Loved it.

It's in Cornwall.I'm not elaborating in order to protect the p&q of it's isolation & low profile although it has been discovered by the Chelsea set & is much busier than it was 40-odd years ago when we first discovered it.
Outside of school holidays & Sunday tourists it still restores my soul.

Plockton.  Two stops before Kyle of Lochalsh, on the south shore of Loch Carron.  Palm trees.
You might think that.  I could not possibly comment.

West Wight if I'm being a bit more picky.

"Traeth hiraeth" in that specific case.

Been to it, this last week.

A couple of decades ago, a naive young Australian came to the UK, started working in a hotel and a few weeks later fell off a cliff, wrecking his ankle.

Although it was only a few weeks, the crags and tops around Wasdale cemented themselves in the young idiot's mind. The ankle injury was a powerful message that he wasn't invulnerable.

This last week, a somewhat older idiot took his kids on a pilgrimage up Mickledore, Scafell Pike, the Guides route then back down to Wasdale Head. The lake district honoured them with blue skies all the way, so Scotland was visible from the peak of Scafell Pike.

The CragOfDoom was located and pointed out and the older idiot realised just how lucky he'd been; the fall had been over 40ft onto rock.

The children were impressed with the steepness and height of the walk. Older idiot's ankle was less impressed and the walk was only completed with the aid of a stick.

It was a great trip, made delightful by the company and the accommodation; Wasdale YHA. No internet. No Mobile signal. Just fantastic views in an old manor house.

For me its the Exmoor National Park, particularly the sea coast between Minehead and Ilfracombe. Minehead's North Hill and Lynton, Lynmouth being particular highlights, but its all just stunning and I find new things to see everytime I go back.

It really depends upon where I am at the time.

If I am in Gods own county of Essex, then for me there isn’t anywhere nicer than wondering around the sea inlets around Tollesbury. http://goo.gl/maps/BN3zB

If I am back home in Staffordshire, then I feel most at peace walking up Ashes Hollow on the Long Mynd and returning via Small Batch http://goo.gl/maps/KyU1r or up the Brown Clee Hill from Clee St Margaret. http://goo.gl/maps/oaWnr

In Scotland, the valley heading north to Durness is most wonderful.

A big rock on a campsite in Narvik on which I sat expectantly when I first watched the Midnight Sun over the fjord on the Solstice in 1988.

Upper Wharfedale.  The variety there is stunning, from the open vistas of Stanks to the enclosed gorge od Conistone Dib, the wild tops of the Valley of Desolation to the lush green woodland of The Strid, the harsh rock face of Kilnsey Crag to the gentle riverside idyll of Burnsall.

Heaven.  My heaven.  My home.

I was watching the midnight sun in 1988! I had cycled from Stockholm airport, partly alone and partly in the company of a chap I'd met on the road.

I decided not to descend all the way to Narvik as I had much camping gear and was useless on hills. I camped at Hærsletta, west of the Norwegian border, then returned to Kiruna.

Hemsby, on the Norfolk coast. We holidayed there every year because we owned a bungalow there that my great grandfather built. My mother spent much of the war there, and my father lived 20 miles inland.

Much of it remains the same as when I when I knew every footpath through the dunes as a lad 40 years ago. The area has fewer holiday makers these days - the paths are overgrown and the beach & dunes have been eroded.  :'(

I last went there a year ago when I did my Nighttime coast 2 coast  :smug:

Not a million miles away, then! Rather spookily, when I was queueing to get a train reservation at Narvik station, I thought that the bloke in front of me was rather like someone who'd dropped out of the Swedish course I was taking at the Brasshouse Centre in Brum. It was he!

The road from Laurieston to Gatehouse of Fleet.  In that direction so you can enjoy the tree canopy on the climb and get the view over to the Isle of Man before descending to Gatehouse.
