Replace rubber seal in track/floor pump?
« on: August 06, 2012, 12:33:02 PM »
The seal is going/gone on mine. The head pops off before I get to 90 lbs/in. It was previously good to 120+

I've had it for years, it's been well used, and owes me nothing, but it seems to be fine apart from the rubber seal.

I can't see an obvious way in to replace it. Are these things generally replaceable, or not?

What make and model pump?

Spare seals are available for some, or you can replace the the whole head.  The Topeak SmartHead is great and comes with adapters to fit almost any pump or hose.

Ah - really useful tip, Biggsy. I'll follow that up.

That's what I used. I had to cut the hose, and now, with the SmartHead one added, I could inflate my tyres from the other side of a velodrome, but that's about my choosing not to make it shorter ;D

I was being too hasty. The head does come apart.

What's even better is that I didn't need to buy anything. The head on my pump has a switch, so it can be used on presta or schraeder valves.

Interestingly, I discovered that the rubber seals (grommet?) for each aperture are identical, just inverted: the seal is narrow at one end for the presta valve, and wide at the other for the schraeder. All I had to do was swap them around!

The hastiness was me discovering this after buying a possible replacement seal at the lbs. It's the right diameter, but about 3mm too long. But it was only (only!) 70p, and I might be able to cut it to length when the time comes (another 10 years or so, based on the life span of the other one).
