While playing with my new CO2 tyre inflator I was reminded of the original purpose for the cartridges.

My nan used to have one (red anodised - cool), and used it regularly to make us "pop", which was usually a bit of Ribena topped up with soda water. Marvellous.

My gran had one too. It's only use was to entertain us grandchildren I think. I can't remember an adult ever making a drink with it.

So did mine! I thought it was the height of sophistication (they'd lived in the USA in the 60s - how cool is that to a nine-year old boy in 1976?). I collected the spent canisters and pretended they were bombs
