Weirdly I keep finding that the notebook on the floor next to my chair has been spattered with liquid cat vom (just brown water really), very considerate not to do it straight onto the carpet that shows up every mark.

Being the birthday girl.  🎂
12 today.
As a treat, I gave her what she always has for dinner.  Seemed to go down well.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Were there pawprints?

Our cat sneaked in and 'helped' paint a skirting board with her tail once.  Ended up giving her a haircut, on the basis that anything that would remove gloss paint was likely to be more harmful when ingested than the paint.

Oh yes, pawprints a plenty!
It is simpler than it looks.

Bloody cat

Middle of the night I can hear a thumping and squealing. She's obviously caught something.

It is cold and I can't be arsed to catch it and clear it up. Go back to sleep.

Morning - no half-eaten animal debris anywhere. Odd.

By about 4pm, I realise she hasn't moved from the emergency guest folding mattress all day. Suspicious.

I look down the back - there is a large and very alive rat.

Pull out mattress, cat pounces . . .  and completely fails to kill rat, which runs over my bare feet and goes under a large heavy cabinet.

There follows a keystones cop comedy where I poke out rat with stick, cat pounces, fails to kill it, rat runs over my bare feet (seriously, what is it with rats and feet? Thank crunchy I'm not wearing flares), circuits the room and goes under cabinet again.

I let dog in. His eyesight isn't great, and he just can't spot rat.

Eventually, I catch rat in cardboard box. Take it outside where the dog immediately pounces on it and puts an end to the bloody saga.

Question is; if the cat is so bloody useless at killing rats, how did she catch it, carry it in through two catflaps and up a flight of stairs?

Maybe the rat caught the cat and dragged it in and up the stairs.

Dumpy Cat has been out in the snow so is thawing out in front of the stove.  Tigs doesn't feel the cold, being rather fat and furry, so has eaten and gone back out.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Not right now, but just after kitty breakfast time, Pumpkin was screaming the place down (that horrible cat fight scream) because there was an interloper cat sitting on the other side of the window. Poor thing.

And then we put them through more stress by stuffing them in boxes to go to the vet for vax and 4WD claw clipping.
Think we might just be about forgiven now.

Stray Skinny Ginger is cowering in our lounge, having entered via the cat flap and annoyed Big Tom overnight.
He's just had a big feed and retreated to the lounge.
Blackie seems to be avoiding him and neither of our cats has eaten much today.
Big Tom is outside.

Ninkasi slunk behind the sofa and is currently there making 'please don't shove me in the box and take me to the vet/cattery' type pathetic mewling noises because she thinks we're up to something. But we aren't  ???

Cat
Sulking a bit because I took her feathered toy off her. Toy flew off out office window, but not before redecorating.

Dog
Very very excited because I clipped some of his claws. They are very overgrown; the vet said they'd have to give him a general on the basis that he's old and looks cranky.
I decided to have a go at one dew claw this morning. Gave him treat, clipped tip of claw, gave him treat.

He was fine.
So I thought I'd try another claw.

Done both front paws now and he gets super excited when I picked up the clippers.

Now I just need to do this every few days.

I could clip all Tilley claws just fine, with a bit of fuss and some treats, it was very easy.

She sadly had a nail/claw issue that cause her to lose all claws.

She now don't allow me near with a clipper no matter how much peanut butter I arm myself with.

But Sam the vet is allowed without anything.

Could have been. I wasn't there.

I think it might be vet's default option, and they were possibly thinking of cutting the claws back a long way - right into the quick (which would be painful and bloody).

I did some research, and it seems that a recommended approach is to cut a few mm off every few days; the quick retreats.

Skinny Ginger is becoming an habitual visitor.
David prefers to name him 'Simon'.
S is more than capable of operating the cat flap and devours all available cat food, unlike the rather picky residents.
I will contact Cat Protection tomorrow to see if they can relieve him of his goolies.

No response from Cat Protection.
D saw cat-loving astronomer friend at AstroFest yesterday, who attested to CP's lack of useful help.
Simon/Skinny Ginger is now curled up on mat below cat flap, effectively deterring Big Tom (about twice his weight) from entering.
Simon is very good licking cat food dishes totally clean!

Cats Protection seems very variable in different areas - probably due to the availability of volunteers.
CP, RSPCA, PDSA seem to only give vouchers to folks on benefits
Might be worth looking for a cat rescue in your area? - our local one occasionally has vouchers for neutering, or will neuter ferals/strays if/when they have the funds.
Vets charge £40-£80 to remove the pom-poms from a male cat.

I expect CP and the rest are totally overwhelmed dealing with the fall out from the cost of living crisis. There's also the Cat Action Trust you could try but they'll probably be no better. If your cats are chipped you could swap your cat flap for a chip reading one that will only let yours in

Our cats aren't chipped. They're ex-feral and hard to handle. We are car-free and vet trips are something of a logistics challenge.
I fear trying to change the cat flap would need another sealed double-glazed door pane, which won't be cheap.

D has a cat-loving friend, who has a car, who could help. I really don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on cats right now!

Ah sorry, I wrongly assumed they would have been chipped when they were spayed.
