R.I.P Oliver

Some of you met the old fellow; sad to report he  took a one-way trip to the vet's this evening after a sudden and total systems failure - the result of an un-diagnosed massive abdominal cancer and consequent anaemia.

He was fairly elderly; we've had him and his  sister for over 11 years, though we don't know quite know their true ages and I suspect he was a few years on from that.

There was no pain, he was still fine until this morning and the vet allowed us to make sure he went with dignity and love.  She did a very good job.  And her brother-in-law rode the Bryan Chapman today...

Ol is severely missed. There's an empty chair next to the Aga today.

I'm sorry MV, that's sad  :'(

He looked a lovely chap, I'm glad he had no pain. How's his sister coping?

She doesn't seem to have caught on that anything's changed yet.  They lead mostly separate lives anyway, and whilst I'm sure she'll miss him when we're not around and she's on her own  - right now she's just enjoying the extra attention.

Bugger.

At least with pre-owned cats, you know they're getting a better life than they would have had otherwise.  It sounds like he did OK for the time you had him.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Yes - he's had all sorts of health problems and I suspect that his final passing was a result of the immuno-suppressant drugs he was on for much of last year.

But he had a great life*, and was always happy and cheerful :)

*especially the last 2 years, living on a farm with an endless supply of small, helpless rodents and no other cats to have to fight

Sorry to hear about the old boy, MV.  He was a lovely cat.  I'm glad his departure was dignified and painless with you there.

It's hard to let go sometimes, but Oliver lived life well, and I am sure you have a great many wonderful memories of him.

Rotten news - that empty space always takes a while to lessen, doesn't it. But it's good that he went gently.

Postscript:

a hand-written card from the vet just arrived in the post.  She was kindly reiterating that we'd done the best thing for Ol, and that she appreciated what a shock and upset it had been.

A very nice touch.

That is nice.  Many people feel doubt and guilt in the days following, no matter how right the process was, and it is reassuring that a professional can say such a kind thing.

The vet sent us a condolence card after Montezuma headed for the catflap in the sky.  It is a nice touch.

I'm so sorry to hear about Oliver, MV.  I'm glad he didn't suffer.

It's taken a while for me to be able to post this.

We lost Ol's sister Amy a couple of weeks ago.  Last pictures:

That last one is one of her usual sitting positions; I'm just gently supporting her there and not holding her :)

If she had been human she'd have been described, I think, as a little bit "slow" but she was a very good natured cat who purred almost constantly and loved nothing better than to be picked up and squeezed hard.

She had just recently been diagnosed with a potential thyroid problem, having slimmed from being decidedly fat to being cat-sized, and it was the effect of that on her heart that finished her off - just 2 days before her treatment was due to start.

When we got her from the CPL all those years ago, the vet's report described her as "A nice little cat". And so she was...

That's tough, Mal - two in quick succession. Who'd have pets, eh? Says he, with dog lying at his feet.
