I think you need a dose of OCD to do something as artificial as that. I'd be forever tempted to deviate to have a look at that plant, see from the top of that rock, avoid that bog, and so on.

I suppose you could still do that but return to the point a which you left the course (it's called audax!).  i can't see this ending well, though:  there are enough obsessives out there for that line to become a Wainwright-trench in twenty years.  And, speaking of bogs, you'd have to be careful where you put your feet not to be treading in someone's exhaust.

I can't see the fun really. We used to walk a lot in the Scottish Highlands, not as a proper hiker or rambler but just improvised strolls from the boat in some deserted anchorage.  Walking in a straight line was impossible unless you didn't mind falling over a cliff.  We rarely saw anyone and the only paths were those made by animals.  The joy of it was not having a route or deadline and also being able to see wildlife which we did our best not to disturb.  I guess we were lucky and it would be different now.
