Bloody hell.  I did a couple of transfers between bank accounts on line this morning, but I hit the daily-transfer limit for the main source account before I had finished.  I phoned the bank just now, gave the chappie the numbers and he did it without batting a telephonic eyelid - didn't even confirm who I was.  OK, it's a country branch & so forth, but I found it a bit worrying.

Family friend sent the Inlaw Paw a bouquet of roses & lilies, the latter unopened.  When they did open the stench was so vile we had to throw them out.

A grateful friend gave me + partner a bouquet of lilies.
We put them in the nice, tall crystal glass vase my sister had given me.
Partner found smell intolerable, so we put vase on the patio, so I could still see the flowers.

A visiting animal knocked the vase over, which broke it.

GRRRR!

At first we thought the pong was due to a change of the IP's condition. Quite alarming.

Not surprised you had animals visiting yours.  Sympathy for the vase.

As with all material possessions, we got over the loss quickly.
This happened several years ago but it has been frustrating having no nice vase for tall flowers.

I treated myself to two tall vases earlier this year.

I refuse to have lilies int he house as I find them intolerable. When we went to my SiL wedding many years ago they had kindly put the lilies in the breakfast room the next morning. I suggested that breakfast might be more tolerable if the lilies were removed sharpish (which they were).
Chemical warfare is what they are. Very nice outside in a strong breeze.

If you really don't like lilies, send them to me.  I love the scent.

It's not the scent, it is the feeling of being hit round the head with a pickaxe handle whilst being asphyxiated. Other than that I love the scent. Outdoors, in small doses.

Some of them are OK. These were somewhere between town gas and rotten teeth.

Is this simply a personal reaction? I love the look of lilies (my mother hates them), and while we've had some that are fairly strongly scented I'm largely indifferent to the smell.

I've never yet come across any I'd react to as strongly as DM  or T42, or HM's David.

Is it one of those genetic things, like smelling / peeing asparagus, or being able to taste the bitterness of sprouts?

I dislike them; my Mum (she of the canine olfactory prowess) HATES them (and chrysanths).

Apparently it's the stamens that stink, and if you remove them you get rid of it. Found out too late for ours.

Haven't noticed the smell before. As Peli like them we have had a few over the years. But the last lot we got ended up in the yarden* within a day. Even out there it was strong.

The flower shop said there different kinds, though I didn't pay attention so can't remember names/types.

Not that I know of. Particular types of lily – stargazer in particular – are very smelly. Others, like tiger lilies, aren't. Some people like the smell, some hate it. It has particular connotations for some people – stargazers are often used in the floral arrangement for funerals, for instance, so people associate the smell with death. Others sniff them at weddings and perhaps think of them more positively until they get divorced. They get more pungent as they die (lilies and spouses).

I'm not convinced it's the stamens, I thought people pulled them to avoid stains from the pollen.

Possibly the whole guts need to be extracted.

If I smelt one of those at a wedding I'd suspect an excessive stag night*.

Please to be fucking off now, nasty chesty cough - a week of hacking up my lungs is more than enough, and having to use buses rather than the bike is getting tedious.

Shortly after I lead the Panzers down Whitehall canned music in horriblemarkets will be banned.  This will have three useful effects:

  • Improving the Customer Experience.
  • Stopping Mr Larrington from singing The Macc Lads' "Feed Your Face" every time they play that piss-awful Band-Aid rubbish.  Out loud.

One of the few definite Deaf Gains I have is being able to turn off the hearing aid in shops so I don't suffer the bloody awful music.  Shame I can't murder most of the bad lighting (100Hz strobo lighting is back in along with cheap LEDs which strobe which really messes with my vision) or the crammed crowdedness horribleness.
