Names are L-R:
Yellow Jersey - Drew Buck (riding a 1950s fixie that year)
Stripey jersey  - Timm Frenzel
Blue polo shirt - Bob Maitland, 6th in Olympic Road race 1948, member of British Tour de France team in 1955, British Road race champion, Britsh hill climb champion, world vets road race champion (age 65-69) in 1989 , PBP, etc etc
Shirtless - George Baugh
behind Pete Gifford in pink shorts and flipflops - Dai Harris
black T-shirt - Pete Gifford.

I don't think the bending-down figure is Noel. I recall the photo was taken after the event, and Noel had gone to the LRM meeting, leaving Pete at a loose end, so he came to see what was going on at the campsite.
I can see it's George, now.  But wouldn't have recognised either Drew or Dai.  Drew's bike that year was a Rotrax, complete with 50s metal Ever-Ready lights.

Ian, were you there that evening when Bill Best displayed his somewhat niche collection of roadside finds?

I'm afraid I was.  There are interesting stories about Bill.

I miss Chris Crossland's smiling face at 1am.
I miss Mike Wigley at a sunny lunch stop in Welton.
I miss Deano's post 300 parties
I miss the Pennines in the dark.
I miss pouring rain and wondering if those lightening strikes will get closer.
I miss the isolation of a long ride
I miss wondering if I can carry on.
I miss the heavy legs after a cafe stop.
I miss doing a cycling event and knowing there are 50 others out there, but never seeing them, but knowing I'm not alone.

I miss all y'all. Though I never ride with you, I've always felt part of the ride we're on.

#slaps_face #pulls_self_together
I'm going to prioritise more calendar events in the future.

An AUK car boot "Control "at the top of Llangyndr Mountain - one of Timm Frenzel's 100 or 200k event from Cwmcarn Paragon CC club shed - sometime in the early 1990s. As Timm drove around the course keeping tabs on us, the stink of burning oil from his Alfa Romeo still lingers in my throat, as does his infective deep laugh (although not down my throat, obviously).

The girl on the left may be wearing one of the early AUK scratchy acrylic tops??

It was from that Alfa Romeo on our way to PBP in 1991 that we* saw a lorry with the registration BRE5T. We considered this a good omen.

It was also in that Alfa Romeo, on the way back from Paris a few days later, that my knee seized up completely.

My father had an Alfa Romeo Giulietta like that, nowadays a very rare beast. He went on to own another Alfa, my brother had two and I'm now on my fourth and fifth ones. I love this picture, it certainly brings back the memories.
alfapete - that's the Pete that drives the Alfa

Lots of faces I recognise in those photos.  Quite a few not around any more.

There's an interview with an LEL 2009 finisher in today's La Gazzetta dello Sport

Her main claim to fame is that she's jointly responsible for my forum name.

From the same ride/photographer (PBP '75, Alan Sturk) - this one's a beauty.  (Talk about socially-distanced ! )

Is everyone else seeing the pics posted by frankie+Tommy? For some reason they don't display within the YACF page for me, but I just have to copy-paste the URL to another tab and Hey Presto!

Anyway, "Dawn on the RN12" is triggering enormous nostalgia for me. It's not a hugely scenic photo, but it captures the exact view and feel I've had many times, uniquely on PBP.

It is the 'Mixed Content' that stops the pictures being displayed in Chrome.

Worked for me (Firefox) but anyway, I've edited the link in my post and in this reply, to remove the 'mixed' element.  Alan's photos are truly redolent of Days Gone By.

The Night is Departing...

I rode the NSN a week after our choir had sung Mendelssohn's 'Hymn of Praise' and that photo captures it...

If you want to see Frankly Frankie's favourite photographic blast from the (not quite so distant) past, go to photos link and search for 'large'.
