Toot Hill pothole in Essex
« on: 04 June, 2021, 09:41:18 am »
Just a word of warning for the many London & Essex riders who do loops including Toot Hill.  I very nearly came a cropper yesterday on the descent of Banks Lane a couple of hundred yards short of the junction with Mount Road.

There is a large pothole in the "racing line" almost totally disguised by a tree shadow.  I hit at 35mph and blew both tubes instantly and was lucky not to come off.  The impact was so violent it threw the gear indexing out of whack and I couldn't seem to correct so had to limp home with clashing & grinding all the way.  Today I'll inspect for frame/fork/rim damage.

Could have been really nasty.  I'm normally a cautious descender for exactly this reason but this one got me without warning.

Thanks for the heads up, and glad you survived unscathed. Hopefully its just the gear indexing issue on the bike.

I do like that road, especially ridden in the other direction towards Toot Hill. My favourite though is Berwick Lane. Can't beat a singletrack lane.
