It's at its easiest at the moment. I'll occasionally set it between there and 5 but I'm not very strong at the moment.

dust in the cage can make the actual setting on the side pretty meaningless - 10 on one can be the same as 1 on another..
If you go into the 'utility' page (I think it is) and look for drag factor, it needs you to take a few strokes and then you can see what the resistance actually is.  The norm for club rowers is 110-115 ish for women, 120-125ish for men, give or take about 10 depending on preference and how long or hard the session is.

(the ergs in my pure gym were so full of crap it was impossible to get the resistance over 100, even on 10).

Last year I took it to pieces for repair. There was a fair amount of crud in there, but removing it made almost zero difference to the feel. It could certainly use some chain lube.

Really? I think you're comparing an individual's machine with another. The settings are not
meaningless, and will feel different if you have it between one and 10.

No matter. Mine is dust-free after 8 months (and over 800,000m) of use.

I am'ish :)

I will row the Leeds Liverpool canal in a advent calendar way. So ~127 miles, 204387m split up in 25 rows picked at random out of a hat by Peli.

These are the rows: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, 10000, Day off, Day off, 10000, 10000, 10000, 10000, 10000, 12500, 13000, 13000, 13000, 13250, 13250, 21097 (=204097m)

If all goes well I should clock up 250000m in the holiday row along.

I'm in.  Hit 250k last year, doubt I'll manage the same this time around because of so much else going on - 200 will be a stretch. Fun times.

I rowed a boat yesterday. First time ever.

It was a half-sized Sgoth (pronounced 'skol').

Winds were light, so we rowed it out of the harbour and back again later.

Keeping rhythm with the other rower was harder than I expected - they seemed to be taking much faster strokes than myself and I had trouble keeping in synch (my stroke might have been longer I guess). My dodge left hand didn't like it much and I had trouble gripping the oar.

Was fun and I look forward to having another go when the boats are out.

I'm barely able to pedal so the rowing machine is getting all the love this year.
I want that free pin, damnit.  ;D

Those are lightweight rowing skiffs.

The sgoith is a traditional fishing boat, quite a bit beamier and heavier, with the full sized version about 25-40ft. I've sailed one of those, it is hard work and needs a crew of 5.

The half-sgoith is still a fishing boat, just 17ft long. Five people on board wasn't crowded. Could be crewed with 3 at minimum, 4 is decent.

The group here have sailed the full-sized sgoith up to Orkney.

Right, back to it, after two days off because booster jab. Lucky I had already booked time off in this row challenge, so I should still be able to hit the target.

@fboab well done on hitting 100000

Thanks. I'm pretty chuffed with myself- though it hasn't been too much of a struggle, except the inevitable blisters.

I have a cunning plan involving a pair of socks and a sewing machine. Watch this space.

oooohhh, I'm 30k away, I should get over it as I got a 3000m, four 10000m, 13250m and 21097m left in my advent row on the Leeds Liverpool canal.

Since I had a 2000m row to do on this and everywhere that talks about rowing talks about "your 2000m training time", I gave it a go. Boy do I not like that kinda exercise - balls out, fighting to breathe, sweating like a waterfall. It took me a good 45min to get over this horror and I could still feel the effect of it 2 days later. So I'm not going to try out for another 2k training time ever again.

I'm a thoroughbred pootler, stop for cake activity kinda guy.

Give me a nice steady 10k row, including warm up, at around 45min, with a show on the telly box.

I've lost weight doing that and feel fitter too. No whatsoever need to HIIT* the waterrower at all.

* I see some of these HIIT and the like use the rower as a part of it. But getting on and off the rower takes time. Get comfy, feet in, check that you are sitting right, got your back and core sorted. Jump on to do 500m, jump off to do 30 of bla to then get back on to do 3x15 of this etc etc. Just asks for you to not get your position right and end up pulling something that will take weeks to get over.

My younger brother (who has already gone past 5 million metres) said he had to wait six weeks for his t-shirt.
