60 years!

I still have the Peter Haining book commemorating the 20th anniversary, which was also marked by the Five Doctors special. Wonder if they'll do a 14 Doctors story for this anniversary.

Ep1 was nothing special, but a nice enough hour.
Ep2 has got going a bit - I think simply because it was a lot funnier.

I'm a bit fatigued from the Doc saving the world from ever more contrived/bigger/infiniter threats: if the characters are going to joke around (and fight Sontar with their mum's wok), I might enjoy this a lot!

I got bored of this some time ago, and it's the main reason I haven't watched since mid-Capaldi era. When I saw the trailer for the new series, I just rolled my eyes. They've saved the WHOLE UNIVERSE so many times now, there's nowhere left to go.

When I was growing up, the stories were usually on a much smaller scale - the Genesis of the Daleks was about a 'local' scrap, and even Earthshock was low-key compared to some of the recent storylines.

And the best stories of the current era are similarly narrow in their scope - Blink and The Empty Child being great examples.

I have to say the current incarnation of the Doctor is just a little too Sylvester for my tastes which is a shame because I was looking forward to a Doctor with a Yorkshire accent.

Actually, looking back over the thread, I can see I did watch some of the early Jodie episodes and even said nice things about them. I just don't remember them.

Just had a look at the first episode of the new series - largely because my son's friend is in it. I don't think she has much chance of becoming a long-term character - she's the younger of the two guards who inspect the prisoner (Swarm?). Fair play to her though - she's come a long way since the school production of Twelfth Night that I last saw her in!

Found myself getting into it a bit. Maybe I'll give this series a chance.

Has yacf stopped watching Dr Who?
Or are you all too drunk to comment?
(And I address that question to the last 18 months, all low on Who reviews).

I enjoyed it, a good old running down corridors episode.

I had understood that last night was the last of Jodie. Wiki tells me there is two more with her this year.

But sadly it looks like there is only two episodes more this year. Which is crap.

We've not watched the new year one yet, so no spoilers please!

I've been enjoying this Doctor, and the last series though - despite my misgivings about series long stories.

Ah right, well I hope you enjoy - as we did - Aisling Bea playing the hilarious character "Aisling Bea - you know, the one in her own TV show a few months back".

Good, 1-off PROPER story, much less derivative than recent story-lines. 8/10 !

(IMO to write a 6hr story requires serious writing skills - which Who writers have yet to display. The formula/setup works brilliantly for 60-90minute stories. And at least 1 dud doesn't spoil the other 5 hours!)

Gah!  I remember when Dr Who wasn't embarrassingly cringeworthy crap.
Switched off with 10 minutes to go.   :-\

Yeah, back in the days of Tom Baker.
I think part of the issue is that the modern Who doesn’t try to tell a story that spans several episodes, there’s no craft to the tales, just fx and scifi tropes.  It’s the mcu take on the story.

I thought the last series was basically one story?

I quite like a well done short story. It’s not as complex, but doesn’t end up dragging an idea out to fit the series that’s been sold rather than the limits of its interest. I also don’t mind a bit of humour, but I grew up with Tom Baker. So I thought this one was ok.

I thought the story was a bit meh, not one of the best. Sadly Jodie haven't had the best writing around. Though the Stephen King jokes was rather good.

You've got to admit it though, it is fun watching imbeciles getting worked up about who can or cannot play an (effectively) immortal being from another planet who can travel through time (& space) and who changes shape every now and again.  MInd you the shape changing is a bit limited, so far it's always been a variation on adult human.  Now what would be really exciting would be, say, a cephalopod or mebbe a dolphin.  Now that I'd tune in for.
