I have a clear memory of my sisters (12 and 19 at the time) watching this on Top of the Pops on the Black & White telly as I was being ushered up to bed. I was 7. The sun was still shining outside (7pm) and I was being sent to bed!!  :o

God this looks so old now:

Eddie and the Hot Rods (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weQ4oNk7Pqc)

I can remember my next door neighbour, me and a couple of others endlessly thrashing this one out in his uncle's workshop.

Awesome. The love of my life (the now Mrs S) had just started at Oxford Uni. I can remember punting up and down the M40 in my Morris Marina TC to that and this:

The song is horrible saccharine.

But it was played constantly when I was about 12, on holiday in France. My Sister (8.) cried her eyes out when she first heard it.

I was reading some Sci Fi at the time. I can't quite remember it. Something about (semi?) sentient jewels.
EDIT: Found it - Dreaming Jewels (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dreaming-Jewels-Gollancz-Collectors-Editions/dp/0575071400) - now I'm going to have to get it - bloody hell, the power of music.

Met Mrs nicknack Easter 1981. Shortly after, we went to see this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xclaB5jrguw) lady in one of the Oxford quads (can't remember which). Not my usual sort of stuff but it was magical, and this still brings a tear to my eye.

1985 - I had just taken the (very near) future Mrs TC back to the station in Luton to return home, after visiting me in Stevenage.

I'd been looking forward to the new Dire Straits Album, and heard this (Brothers in Arms Title track) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5JkHBC5lDs) on the radio on the way back.

It took my breath away - and I still love it.

I could do this all night.  ;D

As a direct result of that song, I went out, bought, and completely failed to learn to play a saxophone.

Tee hee.  Which is why tunes that take you back are best heard and not seen.   That's one of many great tunes on the soundtrack of "That Summer" (http://www.discogs.com/release/780184).

Other tunes take me back to different times and places.

Blue Monday.  Kennedy (The Wedding Present).  Dancing (John Martyn). Thieves Like Us (New Order).

All those tunes put me in particular places (sometimes in motion, sometimes not) at particular times.  (So specifically I'm not going to share.)

But these tunes (they're not the only ones) do this in a way that other  - just as good - tunes by the same people or bands, or from the same time just don't.

And that's something I can't explain  ;)

Form a very dark few months back in about 1991. This was playing at a party when I was at my lowest and it still takes makes me feel a bit odd every time I hear it. Turned out all right in the end as we got back together and 17 years later we still are.

Just poking about among my tapes... isn't it amazing how some music stays fresh, like this, while other stuff dates so badly.

Talking Heads, from Stop Making Sense:

Grrr..

As soon as I saw the title of the thread, I thought:

YouTube - Video Killed the Radio Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWtHEmVjVw8)

Turns out I've been well 'n' truly beaten to it.  Someone took the credit for my second symphony...

So it'll have to be
12" version of Mike Oldfield doing pop from back in '83 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uii8cE783yE)
Can anyone musically knowledgable tell me - is that a minor key that it starts in?  Is that unusual for songs these (or those) days?

Ah, the old 12 inches hey?  That takes me back.

I can think of a few - and Oh Superman and "Video killed the radio star" have already been covered.  This isn't my favourite OMD song (that'd be Joan of Arc) but Talking Loud and Clear reminds me of a picnic on a sunny day with my then girlfriend in a field with the smell of ripe crops wafting in the breeze.

In 1988 I was queuing in the Kings Heath, Birmingham branch of Sainsbury's and the guy behind me suddenly says, "That Roy Orbison, he's dead, you know".

What a legacy, though.

Jean Genie by Bowie and Touch Too Much by AC/DC take me back to a legendary house party I went to when I was 13 or 14.  :D

Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC always takes me back to that era too. Lots of house parties where me and my friend Simon would pretend to be Bon Scott and Angus Young and he'd carry me round the room on his shoulders.  8)

The version on The Division Bell tour DVD with the 8 minute Dave Gilmour solo and the strange Disco Ball thingie has to be one of the musical highlights of my life .

Edit: I watched the whole DVD this week when I should have been working, in honour of Rick Wright.

Faith No More...one of my favourite bands.  I saw them live at the Reading Festival and Hammersmith Odeon.  Brilliant live band.  Mike Patton was the perfect replacement for Chuck Mosely.  I used to put this song on the jukebox in our pub every weekend.

I will also add...
Sweet Harmony by Liquid
Mad World by Tears For Fears
Don't You Want Me Baby by Human League
Kool in the Kaftan by B A Robertson

Hine e hine (http://folksong.org.nz/hine/index.html) a Maori lullaby.

It was played at my father's funeral (the Kiri te Kanawa and the Maori Music Group version - not the awful saccharine Haylet Westenra version).  It also takes me back to my days in the school choir,  when I was the only pakeha in a Maori school.
