Up top, canal with a bit of fence:

Down below, Peasey Beck running through a tunnel:

And even a spare tunnel, presumably for when the beck's a bit full:

I can't see the canal  ???

Has it been closed by Mr Beeching and replaced by a Sustrans path  ???
Milk please, no sugar.

I can't see the canal  ???

It is there, on the extreme left.  It's just a bit green...

Further north, in Kendal, it has, although I don't think we can pin that one on Beeching.  Distinctly dewatered, it is.

Marmite?

Hmmmm.  Mebbes.  In the meantime, 169 Field End Bridge.  So named for the field growing on the end of it

170, Stainton Bridge End Bridge.  I know, I know.  My theory is they named this bit of Stainton parish for its proximity to the bridge.  Then they needed a name for the bridge...  Aaaanyway, it all got a bit weedy hereabouts:

So good they named it twice  ;D  Maybe it's a Cumbrian thing?  We do appreciate our bridges...

Another up-and-under job (do we need an Aqueducts for Ruthie thread?):  171, Stainton Aqueduct

Stainton Beck, running under the canal, together with a lovely stone public footpath:

172, Stainton Bridge

172 Stainton Bridge by billplumtree, on Flickr

Bit of a landmark, this one, cos it's where the water runs out.

The canal bed carries on though.  So do the bridges, mostly.

So, an opportune time for another change of scenery for a while.  And even direction - let's go really wild and head southwards for a while.  Risky, I know: the rule is that, as with most things in life, the further north you go the better things become...

Let's return then to the delights of 154A, Spinney Culvert under the M6.  The west side this time - a good couple of miles walk from the east side, what with there being no tunnel under the motorway.  Well, there is I suppose, but it's full of water.

That is wonderful.  Where are those PONDEROUS CARRIAGES now?  They sound so wallowy and friendly and non-threatening, the opposite of brash JUGGERNAUTS.  And where, for that matter, are the COUNTY COUNCIL CLERKS with names like E. ARCHDALL FFOOKS?

154, Garth Bridge.  A sweet little thing, not on the way to anywhere so not troubled by many visitors, with a view across to the ubiquitous Farleton Knott

153A, Another Bloody Culvert.  Under Holme North Road, so not even summat worthwhile like a motorway.  Le sigh.
