Fargo, the tv series, C4 tonight. I may be watching through my fingers, the film is one of my favourites.

The reviews seem to be good, the Coens were actually involved and it's got Billy Bob Thornton.  The omens are good.

OTOH, 10 episodes is quite a commitment...

Episode 1 was really good.  Thornton was truly menacing, especially the scene when he was stopped by the traffic Cop (which reminded me of the Gas-Station attendant scene in "No Country for Old Men").
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Don Giovanni, the ROH production.  It's very very good.  Don Ottavio is suitably wussy, Don Giovanni is suitably sleazy and Donna Anna sings like a lark.  Not sure about Il Commendatore yet, but he's always better dead.

Not sure about the staging, but the singing is pretty spot on.  "Non mi dir" always brings a tear to my eye...I want it at my funeral.

Not tnight, but last night, a Fast Show special. 20th (!) Anniversary special.

It was the first of two parts, think the second is on next week.

Oddly enough, it still works.

iPlayer currently has an assortment of Horizon episodes dating back to the 60s.  Including the 90s Fermat's Last Theorem one which in my mind represents the turning point where BBC science output went shit.  Plenty of Feynman and space rockets.  What's not to like?

Hadn't noticed that.  I'm on Linux, so the download option doesn't work for me anyway (I have to spawn get-iplayer in another window).  But yes, I'm not seeing a download option for them either.

Get-iplayer does appear to do the business, thobut.

How the Wild West was won - Ray Mears.

Stunning photography, and interesting stuffs from Mr Mears.

Just watched the first instalment - which includes an account of how the Cherokee befriended the first settlers and taught them how to survive in the Appalachians, only for the government to then round them all up and ship them off on the Trail of Tears. Sigh...

I watched "Pointless" this evening and it seemed to me that one of the guys in the final was deprived of a pointless answer because he had a slight speech impediment. The winning pair were from Cardiff and in the final they decided to name three member of the Welsh team that beat England in the 6 Nations in 2013. They chose, in order, Justin Tipurik, Matthew Hibbard and Toby Faletau.

Hibbard is, of course, completely wrong: his name is Richard, not Matthew, but the guy mispronounced Tipuric's name and called him Triptych. He had been having a bit of trouble with his pronunciation two or three times in the programme. Justin Tipuric was a pointless answer. Luckily, Toby Faletau was also a pointless answer so they won their £2000 anyway, but it was perfectly obvious to me that the guy was doing his best to get his tongue around the word "Tipuric" but just couldn't do it. It reminded me of the mispronunciation which has allowed Oldham Athletic to be namd "Thlatic".

Yup. It's another world, both in terms of the racing (or at least the dress, the cars, the TV equipment ...) and in the style of the documentary. Great chunks of time where the pictures and the untranslated foreign dialogue are allowed to speak for themselves.

Got me checking the details of the Paris-Roubaix Challenge too ...

It reminded me of the mispronunciation which has allowed Oldham Athletic to be namd "Thlatic".

That's not a mispronunciation, more a contraction - they've been Latics (or t' Latics) since the dawn of time.

I recall my Dad lending me SIH years ago. For about 10 mins I thought it was great.

Then I realised there was going to be an awful lot of untranslated foreign dialogue ...

I got half-way through it before I succumbed to sleep. I very much hope they're able to put it on iPlayer so I can watch the rest tonight.

Watching the python on Gold.. Some good parts. Best bit was Brian COx being pedantic about the 'just remember' song and being run over by Stephen Hawking in a wheelchair.

Advance notification for those with ESPN.  Film of Richard Moore's Slaying the Badger at 19:00-20:30 on Sunday 27/7. Review here. For those without ESPN, I think it's being shown on 'terrestrial' TV some time during the Tour of Britain.

Banshee is an improbable premise and each episode is liberally scattered with gratuitous sex and violence.  Which may not sound like quality television, but some of the characters are quite good and I suppose it's well-made for what it is.  Currently, series 2 is running on Sky Atlantic.

Andrew Graham Dixon's Art of China on BBC4. Missed the first one but saw the second last night. Some extraordinary ceramics and paintings. They looked like they could have been done in the first half of the 20th century but were from the 11th and to 13th century ! He got fantastic access to stuff in the vaults of Chinese museums that only comes out once every 10 years or so.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
