Distant, poor light and taken through double glazing, but a record of our first visit by a redpoll.

Two adult swans and a line of 10 cygnets walking along a very damp country lane somewhere in deepest darkest Suffolk on Saturday.

Myriad seabirbs including two gannets, a possible seal and a Several of cetaceans including an actual whale.  Which hopefully did a crash dive before it got sunk by a car ferry.

A buzzard in a tree - to which I called "Hello Mr Buzzard" - then a minute later it swooped low over our heads as we cycled down a quiet lane, and kept descending until it was using ground effect, less than a metre off the tarmac. It carried on gliding close to the ground for what seemed like ages  - checking up over its left shoulder to make sure we were not getting too close (I purposefully slowed to prolong the experience), every few seconds, just for a moment, then went back to looking where it was going (probably also looking for small birds, rodents, and oncoming cars). I also saw other buzzards and kestrels (one with a rodent) and a marsh harrier. All on the Dengie Peninsula.

A grey heron on the roof of the house opposite.  It was being dive-bombed by Swindon's most common bird, the townie gull.

That's interesting, in that at the end of May I saw my first redpoll, over on the West coast.
It is simpler than it looks.

A bird of prey (couldn't tell you which sort) trying to fly off with a dead pigeon in its talons. As the bird was at most only marginally larger than the pigeon, this was more a series of elongated hops than a flight.

A pair of Golden Eagles from the North Harris Eagle Observatory.  Too far away to be photographed, alas.

Picnicking beside the Minster when a huge swarm of insects darkened the sky. Bees heading for the Minster itself, the belfry probably.

Very unusually (we rarely see them in winter even) a group of long tailed tits eating bugs off a clematis in our garden.

And heard, rather than seen, a green woodpecker.

A large dragon fly in our living room. The cat was caught it, but wasn't sure what to do next. I managed to open a window and let it out whereupon it flew off, seemingly unharmed.
Rather beautiful.

Hornet mimic hoverfly:

Which was actually much bigger than the two real hornets I saw later, although they do seem to be minus their heads:

Anyone know what this spider is?

You sure it's not one fox, stalking you?

Fireflies in the garden last night.  Haven't seen any for years.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight
