« on: 30 December, 2015, 09:18:35 am »
I'm sure I just double started a thread...?

An earlier start today, heading north from Basingstoke to the Tidmarsh Rd at a pretty good pace. Hope he has a good day today :thumbsup:
DJR (Dave Russell) now retired. Carbon Beone parts bin special retired to turbo trainer, Brompton broken, as was I, Whyte Suffolk dismantled and sold. Now have Mason Definition and Orbea M20i.

(yes you did - I read your first version; a disturbance in the force ... )

Now, if we ignored history before Dec 29th, things would be looking OK right now. He's done a poor-ish day into some headwind to Basingstoke; but now he's set off a lot earlier than recent days, with a lot of land to his North, and the strongest Southerlies you could hope for forecast all day. And he's averaging 25+kph.

Could be a massive day. It'd be fun to see him finish the year with  500 miles directly North, as he doesnt need to ride anywhere on Jan 1st :P

I blame the beer.

I went to the doctor once and told him that I felt terrible. After an examination the doctor said he could find nothing wrong and it could be the drink. I told him I would come back when he was sober.  :thumbsup:

I hope Steve has a good day. Crawling to the end of 2015 on his hands and knees would be nobody's choice.

Confirm that it is worse than evil out there.  Head wind all the way to work - like riding into a brick wall.

....but it was pushing him all the way from Basingstoke to home, as shown by the weather map and  his higher speeds.

Doesn't look as if he is going to be heading straight out onwards to Norfolk though so perhaps there is going to be another shorter day with more rest on the cards.

I'm fully aware bryn that Steve has a tail rather than my head wind.  I might be a girl but I can read a weather map.  You kind of get the hang of it after multiple 18,000 mile years.

My point being its really fierce so he should be zooming along, not simply trundling at a higher speed. Given current state of play the last thing he will be able to do is ride into the wind.

Steve has now according to the tracker been stationary for 2 hours.

75.6 estimated tracker miles.

Seems Steve is on a 'rest' day with 124kms

This weeks numbers so far;

Total = 393km
Daily ave = 131km
Short fall = 593km (measured using a Godwin, 330km per day)

Yup, seems to be inline with the latest health update:

(hope that works!)

My early optimism for an epic tailwind charge has been curtailed.

Shame. :(

I remember an article from a few years back (was it Arrivee?) where the perception of wind direction was analyzed.

IIRC the vectors of velocity and wind mean that the majority of the time you are riding into a head wind.  It is only rarely that all the stars are aligned.

Allez Steve

...and now North through Chatteris.  Hopefully he's keeping his HR low & it's worth bearing in mind that according to the FB post, his health has improved since changes to his diet which I think were based on professional advice.

162ish miles in 14 hours, add another 3 and a bit hrs for a Godwin and you are looking at a two o'clock finish. If not then it's more deficit to make up. I hope he's got some nutrition on him for when he stops or has a lift back to MK pre-booked.

Strategy and everything else aside, that’s a hell of ride in current conditions, all factors considered.
