Indigestion kept me awake tonight - but thank goodness, as I got to see this rather nice noctilucent cloud from my lounge window (clicky for Hi Res):

Taken at about 2:45am.

Beautifully captured!

They've been rather good of late, haven't they?  I have the misfortume of having central London directly north of where I live, so I've not seen them from home this year, but there have been some cracking displays visible from other locations over the last week.

I must get out and take some pics before the season's over.  What exposure etc were you using for that shot Chris?

Canon Powershot A530 camera, 4 seconds @ F3.5 in manual mode.

Sadly, this camera doesn't permit manual focus, and it insisted on fixing on the tree to the right, which needed to be in the frame for better composition. I took some others - I'll have a root through them again to see if there are any better focussed, but this was the longest exposure, and worked best.

We are lucky in that there's very little between us here and the North Sea, so we get unpolluted views of the North sky. Great for noctilucent displays in the summer and aurora in the winter.

Report noctilucent cloud sightings to Ken Kennedy, city astronomer for Dundee.

Noctilucent clouds are not ordinary clouds; they are a phenomenon far higher in the outer atmosphere.

I would post a link to my partner's noctilucent page, but it's borked.

Partner was photographing NLCs again this morning and is still asleep.

No aurora. Almost every other astronomical phenomenon most clear nights possible from London.
