Impressive colour, a far more 'modern' and 'realistic' look than I would have expected.

Although all the people are obviously posed, as must have been required by the technique he was using, he has somehow managed to transform this into an artistic virtue. Beautiful results.

Almost exactly what I was going to say too Cudzfjsukli. Fantasticly clear, almost hand-painted feel about them, and as you say, they have a very modern feel to them (with figures in obviously!), and yes they are staged/posed, but it's like they were taken only yesterday.
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

I once had the opportunity to buy a plate camera for this sort of thing.  It had clever optics inside to split the image into three beams which were then filtered.

Big.

Ungainly.

Awesome.

And hideously expensive.
