Title: I could have commuted in today but...
Post by: vorsprung on 21 December, 2009, 02:20:16 pm
When I made the tea this morning I walked up the concrete garden path and it was an ice slide
I am not in the habit of walking around the dark, frozen garden at 6am
The concrete garden path is a good indicator of what the roads are like around about

So I left the bike in the garage, took the car and stuck to the A road

However the A road was fairly dry and I didn't see/feel any ice at all.  So in theory i could have ridden in up the A road

So on the minus side I have a tedious rush hour journey tonight instead of an envigorating cycle
On the plus side I have bought a load of wine from Sainsburys to take back in the car

I could have commuted in today but...

There are three (count 'em) broken drains on my route.  All three quite frequently cover the road in a thin film of water.  Only it won't be water at the moment.

There were other cyclists about, but I just don't want to risk it at the moment.

....it was snowing last night when I got home with a "thaw" (ha ha ha) forecast through the night and I fully expected the A roads to have a delightful combination of slush and ice this morning.  As it happens they were clear and ice free.  Bum.

I wimped out as well. I looked at the roads; ice a meter out from the kerbs in places. A64 not sensible then. I considered the likelyhood of the wetherby road being gritted on its entirety. Not likely.

I took the train.

I took the train, but I'm kicking myself for it.  I was due to open up, and I couldn't face being delayed by those stupid motons again.  I'd looked out of the window at 6.30, and it seemed to be no different from last night.

Walking up to the station an hour later revealed that the busier roads were much much clearer, though :(

No news on the motons ;D

I was driving - well, passengering - past Wetherby the other day.  Thought of you and your commute and wondered how it was going in this weather.  I think that the train was probably a wise_idea!

I'm still cycling in.  The roads are pretty clear (I never use the cycle paths anyway), the traffic is light, and the drivers have been pretty courteous.

Cycling home last night was fun: I cruised past a queue of traffic to the supermarket, then past a different queue of traffic on the way back :smug:

Since I don't drive, I don't have an alternative to cycling.  Work is close enough to walk, but it would take more than an hour in the hard-packed snow and ice we've got in County Durham, and the buses are running nearly an hour behind schedule, so I mightn't bother even if I didn't live a fifteen-minute walk away from the bus routes.

Much better to cycle :)

Not

Was going to cycle in this morn, stepped out onto the solid ice and thought 'bu%%er'. It melted then refroze last night, not good. So wimped again.

Not been out since ast thursday but it looks like some warmer days are on the way.

All my cycling is on small rural lanes which are currently too snowy/icy to risk.  It's no fun if you are thinking about falling off on every bend.

Going a bit stir-crazy though.

Yep, bike remains in locker at work.  Roads like skating rink, no friction there at all.

My legs are developing an odd twitch, and I  keep having to flex my calves.

Roll on summer ...

I could have commuted by car today but I went by bike, and I was very glad of it since it made getting into town at lunch time a lot easier than it could have been.

..I got the bike out of the garage.  The back wheel was binding.  A closer look showed a broken spoke.  The wheel has only been used for 2 weeks!  All the other spokes are solid.  The spoke broke at the nipple end, I guess it's just one of those things.

So I back off the back brake.  It barely works.  Then i remember that the front brake isn't so great.  It also is 2 weeks old but the appalling weather and the made-of-cheese shimano blocks have worn down.  I try to adjust the front brake but it is so caked in mud that it's difficult to adjust.

So I give up and take the car

The reason I got a new bike was to prevent unreliability issues from stopping my commute

For some reason I decided to work from home today.

Still got some miles in because I had a hair cut this afternoon.  Had a real blast riding back from town with the wind behind me, and discovered a useful short-cut on cyclestreets.net which I tried out on the way home.  It turns out with that I can avoid the nasty chicanes entirely.  Shouldn't be necessary to find these routes though and it only helps for riding to centre/north of town not south.

I'm pretty sure they want to hear about mistakes to improve the quality of routes.  It might be just down to fixing the OSM data for the relevant streets.

It started out as a Cambridge-only project and the quality of routing here is very high.  This isn't the first time I've discovered unknown short-cuts using it.

Next week, due to Easter Hols, not only will the traffic be very light, but a parking space is available under our building.
I intend to drive in every day. Other than the occasionally rare one off for business or personal logistical reasons - It's been 15 to 20 years since I've done that.    Wish me luck - I'm sure I can do it.

Perhaps you'd like to demonstrate how it should be done?  If you are short on tents and handbells simply make up the difference with extra sand.

The route is Devon to Somerset via the Blackdown hills, approx 300m climbing

I'm quite excited because I've got 1000km again this month.  I need to do 150km to beat my best ever (last month), and that's likely, given the rest of this week and Saturday's tandemming.  Plus 120km will get me to 6000km for the year, which will make me awfully happy.

Gotta keep riding

Yup. I'm off work for the first two weeks of August, so I'll need to find some motivation other than the commute to keep the mileage ticking over. Ought to be easy in theory but I suppose I really ought to spend some time with the family. Reckon I should be able to sneak in a couple of crafty DIY 200s though.

I feel particularly awkward when passed by cyclists on my way to/from the station.  Is there some kind of badge I can wear to show that I'm really a cyclist?  Apart from (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/Themes/yACF%20Grey/images/yacf.png), that is ;)

I'm still not well enough to go to work.

I developed a migraine just before knocking-off time yesterday.

So I got a lift home with a colleague last night, bizarrely on clear roads.  Which was in contrast to their condition in the morning when I rode my bike.  I just couldn't see well enough to ride.  Or drive.  Or walk.

Head still a bit hurty, disoriented at times, rather vague.  It's rubbish.  And I'm already 'under monitoring' for my sickness record   :-\

And my poor bike is still in its locker at work.

depending on conditions, that seems reasonable - well the first part anyway.

We've just had a cycle maintenance session put on by our Green people as a elayed part of Environment Week postponed because "The adverse weather has meant the cycle company providing the training are unable to access their equipment". I have visions of their lockup being buried under a huge mound of snow.

We had an email yesterday afternoon exhorting us to think carefully before making the journey home and advising us where overnight accommodation could be found.

This morning's 06:49 email just said "the site is open, the roads are clear". It might just as well have said "where are you?" to which the answer would have been - "on the way to work"...)

Tried to commute but just wasn't going to work. The A57 was a parking lot and the surface through Aston was unridable, even on a 'cross bike. I say unrideable, I did manage to make it to the Coop but didn't want to sustain such rough riding for the remaining 9 miles into town. I came to the conclusion it would be better to buy coffee and pancakes and head back home. I may try again later.

I could have commuted in today but...having mounted my bike (http://www.bikester.co.uk/) on the drive, I soon realized I had underestimated just how icy the slope was. Lost control of the bike, bike fell to the left far too quickly to do anything about it...I fell into the flowerbed. Hubby found it hilarious, of course.

Over 8 inches of snow. The buses weren't running. Walked for 70 mins to the station,  then some nice snow-encrusted trains to London. On the return trip, there was nowt out of St Pancras, so I'm now aboard London Midland's finest to Tamworth.

going back to the thread title....

I left my bike at work last night cos I was dining at Buckingham Palace and there is, apparently, nowhere to leave a bike (which was a relief as I was in full white tie regalia).  When I left, I wished I had been on the bike as I had to bung a ludicrously large tip to a cabbie to get him to agree to take me home (sarf of the river an all that.)  Coming home tonight wasn't too bad on the main roads as the traffic, curiously, wasn't that heavy so I didn't get much hassle when in primary, but as soon as I got off the A-roads I had to wheel the bike as the local roads were just sheet ice.

Picking up ItsBruce's comments, I was glad to be on fixed tonight.  It just felt a little more secure, but I don't know why.

Meh. slept in. Checked weather (from the warmth of the duvet; smartphones are lovely). -9 and falling. contemplated the 8 miles of ice I had last night having turned into 27miles of ice. Check trains. they are running on time.
Go to station and buy ticket. fecking trains aren't running on time, and the one I did catch didn't have heating. Now -14 outside York - so the icy roads wouldn't have been slippery.

I just checked on Google Streetview, and there's definitely some railing around Buck House that you could have locked a bike to, although it's possible that the local security (I think called the Met Police or something like that) may have had issues with you doing that. ;D

I decided to public transport it again, since I'm still feeling a little bit off colour, and didn't really fancy the extra effort of cycling in, especially since it's a little bit nippier out today than it was (LGW has -5°C and LHR has -3°C currently).  Of course, the District Line picked almost the exact time I arrived at Wimbledon to fall over entirely, so I took a somewhat more circuitous route, which got me to work, only more slowly. :-\

I spent some Christmas money on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and keep losing track of time when playing it. Or not so much losing track of time as thinking "I should go to bed, but I'll just complete this mission." "I should have gone to bed half an hour ago, but I've just unlocked a new area so I'll explore it first." "I should have gone to bed an hour ago, but I've found some new assassinations to do..."

...and so on. And when one isn't going to bed until 1:30, it's jolly hard to get up and on the bike when the alarm goes at 6:55.  :-[

That must have been some drive. Everyone ok?
Yeah - the other driver was a 90 year old woman who was more concerned about her hairdresser's appointment - seemed to have no idea that the broken double lines on the road mean 'give way', not 'pull out into the side of the car that is now almost directly in front of you' (I did the math ... that's a physics background for ya ;) ). Her car has a broken headlight, mine had a bent A-pillar the passenger side door caved in - 10 year old car, so it doesn't take a genius to work out that I'll not be seeing it again. Since it was my first car, and I'm a sentimental old fool, the front number plate now lives behind my desk :)

As a mate of mine on Facebook pointed out, "at least you weren't on your bike" - he has a point, if I was I'd have been axle dressing.

Just got all the insurance related stuff to deal with now, but on the plus side I have enough of a budget to buy something which has a bit more grunt and is capable of carrying me, girlfriend and/or bikes in comfort.

I got lycra'd up yesterday and rode to work, mainly because I had to go via the garage to take the roof bars and bike rack off the car and pick up a few miscellaneous odds and sods (like the new CD I realised was in the player ...). Felt like an absolute wreck when I got to work - being shunted sideways across the road has evidently aggravated my back. Again.

Going to the doc's on Tuesday - I had a back spasm last week (unrelated to accident) and want to factor out the after effects of that (and yesterday's ride :) ) before I go down the personal injury claim route, which I don't really want to do, but ... <insert moral dilemma here>

Riding home from work across a T junction.  I had right of way.  The driver drove into my right side, I was hit by the bumper, went across the bonnet, and seem to have landed on my face.  Which hurts.  I don't remember any of it.  I do remember lying with my face in the road, and some kind passers-by looking after me.  It wasn't very nice but I think I'm okay.  Two hours in hospital getting cleaned up and giving a police statement.  They glued my ear and my eyebrow.

I think I may have gone a bit ranty in the ambulance  :-[

My penance was to have to be on a train through Mordor Central.  Even worse, on the way back, some celeb was evidently in the seat two or three behind me, as people kept wanting their photo taken with him.  I wouldn't have known him from Adam, but am told it was that Wagg-nerr bloke off of the X-filesfactor.

Dodgy stomach this morning, so back on the Tube.  This is doubly bad as I had planned to drop off the bike at the LBS.  Now this is pushed back to Wednesday as I have to head into Westminster for a meeting first thing tomorrow morning so back on the Tube again. :(

It's Monday, and my day 'off', and that means lots of walking small people to and fro and to and fro and no bike riding :(

Mind, I did manage to walk a ludicrous amount this morning.  Left for school about 8:15, got back four hours or so later and spent most of the interim (apart from a 15 minute coffee stop at a mates and 20 minutes work-on-my-day-off) stomping around the streets from one place to another.  Busy busy busy....

Thursday:  work at library to be on time for parent-teacher consult; jury-line says "Turn up at court for 11 o'clock"
Friday:  turn up at court; discover have lost book en route ; sit in room with 70-odd other potential jurors while Sheriff oversees a plea-bargain (last-minute "guilty" to various charges, some amended, "not-guilty" to another) - before sending us all home with a brief "thank you".  No point in going to office - so working from home.

Having spent 2 days consolidating budgets from various departments my head finally exploded.  Woke at 1am and could I get back to sleep?

Saw dawn break and then the alarm went off, lay there, with radio 4 quietly chattering in the background, feeling like I had been hit by a train thinking I really should make a move, when 'er in doors comes up with the killer reason not to use the bike.

"If you want to spend all day Sunday drinking beer, eating crisps and watching the Paris–Roubaix we will have to the shopping tonight."  I'll find the car keys I mumble.

RESULT.

I think the bearings in the rear wheel have gone on the Kaffenback, or something is going south anyway, so my usual 20+ miles of commuting is probably a bad idea, and is just terminal failure waiting to happen somewhere maximally inconvenient for work and home.

I'm a bit loathe to lock Red up in the bike store at work, he looks too desirable, and even with three locks on him I'd still be worried.

That leaves Vince, the snow bike, who has 52" singlespeed gearing and studded tyres, so would be hard and noisy work to cycle over that distance.

It's easier to just jump on the Tram and Tube, and at least I can read my Kindle. :)

... I'm on holiday.  My holiday house is 25 miles away from where I was doing my volunteering, the only bike is a Brommie with flat tyres, there's a nasty hissing noise when I screw on the 1960's pump, I've hired a car, the roads are quite empty, and I had to be there at 0830.

I had a fabulous time.  I managed to delay two trains by 10-15 mins each, by dint of not putting a certain lever back into the frame hard enough.

Lie-in tomorrow.

... I've been in Edinburgh since Saturday. It's a much more interesting place to cycle around than London. I covered all the points of the compass while revisiting old haunts (Sneaky Pete's is still going!) and didn't find any hills I couldn't manage on a 70 inch gear;)

Mind you, cycling down Frederick Street, I found the combination of cobbles, steep incline, well inflated slick 25s, clipless pedals and fixed gear to be quite exciting. It's one way to find out if any of your components - or fillings - are loose.

Yes, but most of the time on public transport in London, it's not a few interactions with others, since you're jammed into a carriage like a sardine. :-\

In spite of getting back on the bike yesterday and actually enjoying the commute, I took the tube today.  I woke up in plenty of time, intended to cycle, but was just too tired. :(

I'll try again tomorrow.

I had to get the c*r to the garage for MOT, booked in along with the information "The water bottle needs replacing". Said garage phones me to tell me first "The lease company are not approving the replacement" Fine, not my car, goes back in a few weeks and that's the end of company cars for me. Then "The water bottle needs replacement for the MOT, so the lease company have approved it to be done. Still fine. Then "We don't have one - will take till tomorrow to replace" Grrrrrrr. Stuck on the tube again tomorrow. May ride anyway.

I have a leaving do this evening so opted for public transport. Two things that really peed me off this morning:

1) Bloke next to me on the train kept sniffing and quite frankly he stank. When he alighted at London Bridge it was a frigging relief.

2) I oystered in at Charing Cross and tapped in at Embankment to find that my card had flashed red. It turns out that at Charing Cross it had deducted me £6.50. For a single trip from Hither Green to Charing Cross. 'Sorry love, can't refund you as its national rail, you have to contact this number'. Grrrrrr  >:(

These two points demonstrate why I cycle. When you go by public transport you are cattle and a slave to their systems.

Commute resumes tomorrow.. :)

Bah!  The evening tailwind always pales in comparison to the morning headwind.

It is the Staff Awards tonight so have to wear a nice dress. Came in by train and tube today. Bad atmosphere at station as they cancelled some of the destination stops on its way to London Bridge and reduced the number of carriages from 8 to 5, so lots of people alighted cussing very loudly. Just as the doors were closing I realised that I had not tapped my oyster in  This resulted in a £20 fine at Cannon Street.

I cannot wait to get back onto the bike tomorrow - effing bloody public transport  >:(

Mrs F is away all week for work, so I need to stay back and get the kids off to skool.
No time then to ride in.

When deciding that gusting wind makes the journey by bike too risky I should remember that the return by public transport will take six times as long and that it's quicker to walk the eight miles.

There's a lot of that about at this time of year - but in less than 2 weeks it'll be getting lighter. Lay off yourself and keep the commuting run down a bit meantime- part way by car or just don't bike it every day?

Thanks to all, especially Eck, for the words of support and advice.  Going to take the computer off my commuter and take a less challenging route for next week, stop chasing the figures.  Fortunately I then have 3 weeks off over Xmas and NewYear so I plan to take a break, grab some R&R and look forward to 2012.  As some may know I ride as an alternative to taking medication for depression (PTSD) so not riding for a prolonged period is not a realistic option for me.

I'd cycle commute, but my bicycles are several thousand miles away, and to get to the Space Science Laboratory, I'd have to cycle a couple of miles of one in ten!  Even in a car, it's a moderately challenging drive, my anicent 1.2L Corsa would probably die after a couple of days of trying to get up it!  A lot of San Francisco doesn't seem to be for the faint hearted cyclist.

I tend to stop my coffee intake by lunch time, and only very rarely ever have any on a weekday evening.  I think my problem may be more complicated than caffeine - work stress.
Title: Re: I could have commuted in today but...
Post by: clarion on 23 January, 2012, 11:22:27 am
I know where you're coming from.  I've cut down caffeine massively, and have finally got blood back into my coffeestream, now that I'm off the black nectar and only drink tea, and try to drink decaff in the afternoons.  I used coffee to deal with work stress, but you can't win in that war.  It's with less caffeine that I am making my (limited) progress. :-\

Post by: Notsototalnewbie on 23 January, 2012, 11:27:41 am
Ah, that work stress is a bit more complicated.  :-\ I hope it gets better soon. The reason I stopped the caffeine was because I was also using it for work stress in my last job, and I came to realise that by 5pm I practically needed scraping off the ceiling, I was so jittery.

I wasn't feeling well so didn't go to work today.  What really hurts is that I'm around 20km shy of 800km for this month - would have easily cycled that far today if I was well.  OTOH, if I hadn't had so many late mornings resulting in suing my short route I would have hit 800 some time last week.

Back on the bike tomorrow, I hope!

Yes I've had a rotten cold too and unusually for me let Claire persuade me to get a lift in to work and back.  Somehow I think I won't be cycling in again until next week - at least that will give me the opportunity to fix the slow puncture on the Winter bike though.

I've taken a fair bit of flak from the other cyclists at work.  They're convinced we've won the lottery and I have a new car and chauffeur but not told them about it (I run the syndicate).

Bedridden Monday to Wednesday with flu. Back to work yesterday, so rode the three miles to the station in the morning - into an arctic headwind. Very hard work & slow going. Also noticed that my Brommie's bottom bracket is undoing itself again - by the time I was riding to the station in the evening for the train home, it was fouling the crank. Grrr! Got the bus home from the station. Didn't have the strength (mental or physical) to fix it when I got home last night, and in any case was feeling a bit feeble this morning after yesterday's exertions, so had to resort to my least favourite option - I drove to the station this morning. The shame!

I’m babysitting in a hilly London suburb this evening straight after work and a) I really couldn’t be bothered to go out in the freezing cold to fiddle with the umpteen padlocks/chain on the bike bunker to get the bike with gears out (I am NOT taking the heavy Dutch bike, currently blocking the hallway, up any hills) and b) I’ll be coming home quite late, when it will be extra cold, and I don’t want to be looking out for ice when I’m already tired…

(I know it hasn’t rained, but some people like chucking water over their car windscreens in this weather, making ice anyway)

SNO everywhere.  Windcheetah is a rusted lump in the garage, and there'd be so much slushy spray at face-level that riding it wouldn't be pleasant.

So it's on with the snow-boots, and dust off the local bus equivalent of the Blue Mollusc.  (Actually a "Mango" card.  Not an obvious culinary combination.)

I guess I could have risked cycling but one of the nights I was nearly a full hour late leaving and just couldn't face being that late leaving with the commute to do as well.

I could have commuted HOME today but...

Headwind.  Frightening lashing rain driving straight in from the Atlantic.  And I'd been up since 4am, and ridden in (with tailwind) through similar rain for an 18-mile trek, mostly off-road.

So I came home in a taxi, and have booked another one for tomorrow morning to retrieve my bike, get on a (steam) train, then trundle back Midlands-wards bidding a fond (except for the blinking weather) au revoir to Cornwall.

Got next to no sleep last night so was in no condition to trek to the closest hire bike stand that takes credit cards then navigate my way across Dublin.  Instead, I hailed a taxi. :(

If the weather stays as it is, I will try to make up for this morning on the trip back to my hotel tonight.

Side note, one of my students is diabetic, and towards the end of the lesson his expression had changed slightly and his character too. By some quirk of mismanagement combined with dropping people off at railway stations and being called back in to work last night to sort out flooding, I found this morning that:

1) My commuter bike was still in the office from last night
2) My spare bikes were all locked in the garage at home ... but the garage keys were on my desk at work
3) The car is at home, but the car keys appear to be in London

so I walked - only to get doored as a pedestrian whilst squeezing past a white van, which was half parked on the pavement. The driver opened his door as I was passing, realised what he'd done (I suspect) and drove off at speed when I went down. I'm not really sure quite what happened, but I appear to have gashed my bald patch (on the door mirror on the way down?).

The annoying thing is that I've only just started riding my bike again this week after 3 weeks off for a sprained neck. It's starting to piss me off that it's the second time in the last few months that I've been doored as a pedestrian when passing vehicles parked half on / half off the pavement.

The bathroom is fine.

It's the kitchen that is the issue.

Teenagers off school.

Hot damp weather produces blowflies.

Teenagers do not get concept of:
 - Taking dirty dishes (with food scraps) from bedroom to kitchen.
 - Not leaving open jars of food, open packets of ham, etc out on kitchen surfaces.

My patience is wearing thin. Very thin.

No commute in this morning on account of it being Junior#2's first day at the Big School.

I was left in no uncertain terms that I would *not* be up and out at 06:00, I would be staying back to see him off on his first day.

So I've packed the bike in the car, and will at least get a ride home, and then a ride back in tomorrow morning to collect the car.

My bike has developed a slow (but getting less slow all the time) visitation in the rear tyre and, having spent four and a half hours driving yesterday (and working fairly intensely in the bit between the two drives) I didn't have the energy to sort it last night.
The deciding factor was not MrsC hinting that I 'might' go to collect the obesity control cat food from the vet, oh no, not at all.

Again.  That's a hell of a commute you do, and I'd only be able to manage it if my bike and my health were at their peak.  No shame in making a sensible decision.

Pity that the unsympathetic external factors don't help.  Nothing you can do about the weather, but other people can help in this situation.  Hope that improves.

Think I might have been right

I tried cycling in - having to pedal down a road when I normally hit 35+mph should have been a warning. When I got to the main junction on the road, the police were turning motorists back and around a 20km detour to get to the base.

"Excuse me, if the road totally shut, or could I get through by bike?"
"Do you have a snorkel with you? Is it life or death?"
"I'll go back home then and get the car"

... but I had to hang around awaiting a delivery of cat stuff.  I'm glad I did, because even though I arranged for the delivery to use ParcelForce rather than Yodel, this still means it gets dropped at a localish Post Office, two miles away.  Picking up these two boxes with the trailer would have been possible, but hard work, I actually had to unpack one on the doorstep, because that was easier than trying to pick the entire box up, and get it over the handlebars of the bike in the hallway!

There's still a third box in the system, which somehow got separated from the other two, so there's a good chance I'll have to pick that one up.  Until today's delivery turned up, it was a possibility that all three packages would appear (on the basis that the tracking had lost it, but not the delivery company), and lugging that lot back on the trailer would have been damned near impossible!

Rear tyre was flat

So I removed wheel, checked for debris, thorns. Couldn't find any but did realise that the tire was absolutely threadbare. Remove tube, find hole. Get out patches and glue - glue has evaporated from tube. Look for spare innertube, contemplate riding to Leeds on threadbare tyre with no spare tube and no way of patching a puncture.

Catch train.

I negotiated a later start and finish with this week's Friday site.  So that Granny Annie could come round and collect me in her car, and then when we got to school I could push her and her oxygen bottle in the wheelchair round from the car park and into school and up in the lift to the upstairs hall in time for Celebration Assembly in which the SmallestCub was presented with a Headteacher's Award for his progress in reading - and nearly burst with pride when he showed off the book he'd chosen, and grinned from ear to ear when he spotted me and Granny, since I hadn't told him we'd be there.  Then she gave me a lift out to the village I was working in.  Worth missing a commute for - especially given how icy it was out there!

Then it got icy.  Bus ~£3/day => 18 ice days = 1 pair Schwalbe Snow Studs (Spa Cycles); 29 ice days = 1 pair Marathon Winters (Chain Reaction)  :-\

Title: Re: I could have commuted in today but...

I wish my alternative were a 2-mile walk.  OK, it is if I'm library-working, but usually I've got an hour on the bus (not to mention waiting for it), driver in shirt-sleeves, heating cranked up to 11, and the rest of us knees round our ears and melting inot our boots >:(

OTOH, I know from experience that it only takes the tiniest bit of black ice, or half a car-roof's-worth of snow at the critical bit of a smart right turn across traffic to dump you in a sprawling heap in teh middle of the road.  That's the moment you've lost Control and it's scary because your safety depends entirely on the unknown abilities and awareness of a bunch of strangers in charge of fast-moving lumps of metal ...

Dr RJ (contrary to occasional appearance) doesn't want me coming home in a box.  Still, I may float the idea of punting £50 on winter tyres (German quality, natch ;)), largely on the grounds that being able to cycle more often at this time of year might make me a bit less effing grumpy ...

Ho hum.

I'm being a wuss today.  The ice on the patio table doesn't bode well, considering the amount of water we've had all over the roads recently.
I shall have to dig out my swimming stuff instead.  When was the last time I was in the pool.  This is going to hurt!

Right call. Black ice in the village square made for some very interesting steering in the car. I would have been off if I'd hit that on the bike.

The garage door was obstructed by fathers car, itself obstructed by the bins awaiting collection. Normally the bins are behind the other shorter car, but dad wasn't commuting today either. I shall struggle if the trains go wrong later.

My suggestion: break the ice BEFORE you jump in, it will hurt less.

... after the second 'off' and the destruction of £70 worth of cycling shorts1 I decided that a) discretion is the only part of valour and b) there's nothing big or clever about a broken pelvis and bailed at the top of the village.

The roads weren't too bad, but the cycle tracks and paths were in appalling condition, not helped by a partial thaw last night followed by refreezing. Not even Comically FatTM tyres at stupid low pressure  are any good on black ice.

1 - Ice can be quite sharp. It's also cold.

Too icy to do the normal extended (12 - 17 mile) commute around the lanes.

Only 2.5 miles direct - so I ran in instead.  O:-)

Direct mountain bike commute planned for tomorrow - in preparation for The Really Bad Weather when THE COUNTRY FREEZES.

Foot deep snow here in Cardiff (or least in my outskirty bit) - too much - more than two miles of untreated  - or not treated enough - roads before hitting bits that were navigable.  I hate to drive in -first time in months but this level of snow is too much.
Normally I would be doing extended 'commutes' through Pontypridd and the southern bits of Rhondda-Cynon-Taff - they're currently building igloos I think...
Weather not good in south east Wales today.

A few inches of snow here at 7:30 this morning (Bristol/Bath area). Thought the main roads would be clear, but they weren't. After several slides I decided to head back and work from home today. At least I was on my fixed with dual spd/flat pedals, but it was still pretty hairy. Cycled about 1.3 miles at average <6mph. Walked a bit too.

I tried to commute, I set off from my house in Radyr, NW Cardiff a little earlier than usual (7am). I cycled around the corner and up a gentle slope on Bryn Derwen. I came to the 1 in 11 descent of Drysgol Road and dismounted. I walked down.  I remounted  for a another 50m and decided to catch the train. The Llantrisant road could be lethal so I walked down the hill to the station.  The Valley Line trains were running if not quite to timetable. I got on the next train and arrived in Cardiff late for my intended train. A pity because that was the last train to leave westward for over two hours.  I waited untill 9:30 listening to canceled train announcements and decided enough is enough and returned to platform 7 to catch a train back up the valley.  The roads in Radyr are uneven snow and ice it can no longer be cycled safely I walked back up the hill and arrived home at 10.30.  I tried to commute but I did not.

This week:  a Virus (apparently - 10-second diagnosis seems to have been:  your glands are swollen, you've got an infection, no obvious signs it's bacterial, ergo it's a virus).

Previous weeks, following this year's good start, all struck off due to ice-shyness and failure to fettle the winter bike.

I didn't commute properly yesterday.  I was not enjoying the runny snotty period of a heavy cold so I thought the attempt to ride to work might reward me with pneumonia. So I decided bike/train was the answer.

I was not functioning too well yesterday. I had misplaced my keys, by the time I located them I had missed the train I intended to catch into Cardiff.  I am only allowed to catch one route from Radyr to Cardiff in the commuter line so I had to wait half a hour. There are four trains heading west to Bridgend from Cardiff in the half hour from 7.50.  I would of caught a train that would have got me to work with half hour to spare.  Now the next train was 8:48. I would be 15 minutes late to work but it didn't leave on time so I arrive at work forty minutes late 1hr and 10 minutes later than I expected just for leaving the house five minutes late.

Today I am feeling much better so rode into work on time.

Bike 1. (Green Bike) Bottom bracket was creaking alarmingly so I removed cranks but could not remove the bottom bracket which had not been installed twenty years ago.  So the bike shop has the bike.
Bike 2. (Orange Bike) Still needs parts before I can rebuild. Come on Chicken's it was order three weeks ago.
Bike 3. (Pink White and Blue Bike) Still in pieces, Will rebuild it after bike 2.
Bike 4. (Red bike) This bike is looked after well and is not used as commuter at least not in bad weather.

So I am catching the train most of this week unless I get really pissed off sitting on the train then red bike will be used regardless of the rain.

This.
Whilst York doesn't seem to have the same automotive fuckwittery that plagues London (although I did spot someone's successful attempt to wrap a Honda Civic round a set of traffic lights on Wednesday) the combination of people getting mown down and the fact that my commute home is uniquely horrible has mean that I've not really fancied riding at all this week - at least on the turbo trainer I know that nobody will try to kill me.

So I get in the car. Just round the corner a car coming the other way pulls in to let me pass, then signals for me to open my window.
"You won't get to Yeovil on the main road, there's been a nasty accident".
So I go the other way round (which is not cycle friendly).
MrsC saw the accident. A car on its side exactly where I came off last Tuesday (and pretty close to where another car had overturned a few minutes before I came off).

A good call I think.

Ice tyres seem a bit overkill in the soggy south west.

I haven't ridden in a week.

Every night is spent packing and moving carloads of crap. A 50mile round trip commute is not compatible with an evening spent hauling furniture about.

I couldn't be arsed to mess about with flat tyres at 10 past 7 in the morning. I changed into a different (non-lycra) pair of shorts and walked in.

At least I've been told I can knock off an hour early so I can "put my bike back together".

<note to self: do summat about at least one of the three bikes in the shed and two others in the living room. Only having one roadworthy bike can be a PITA>

I really should have rested up a couple of days after the whisky cycling tour.  Barely a month out of hospital and I do not have the strength I need.  Cycling is deceptively fun and only later do I realise I'm drained.  So back on public transport today.

I should have commuted today but the weather was wet.  Normally not a problem,  First choice Orange bike is at the bike doctors have its spacers rearranged. Green bike does not have working brakes.  Red bike is afraid of the rain, it tells me its tyres will go pop if I take it out at this time of the year in the wet. So I got absolutely soaked walking to and from the railway station (about an hour).

I have decided to have a week off riding.  Next week I will have orange bike that is raring to go on another winter of commuting.  Friday's expected brake block delivery will probably happen today so I can fit them next weekend.   So I will have two commuting bikes.  I will be full fed up with the train by then.

I should have used red bike today despite the puncture risk.  I caught the 7:23 train at Radyr. This train takes the long way around the coast to Bridgend at 8:40. By the time I walk from the station to work I would be late.  So at Cardiff I swap to the 7:50 (Manchester to Milford Haven first stop Bridgend) train which I expect to arrive at 8:09 which is enough time for me to walk to work with ten minutes to spare. I am sitting in the train and I noticed that it has not departed.  The guard walks down the train saying sorry a tree has fallen across the main line we are going to go around the vale.  I arrive in Bridgend at 9:15 and work at 9:45.

when I woke up, my right leg was dead, as if I'd slept on it and cut off the blood.

Stayed like that when I got up. Staggered downstairs, wondered what to do. no control over my leg, no strength in it Was intending to cycle but frankly felt scared to try it in case I couldn't manage and ended up stranded. Was already too late to catch bus, so ended up on the train. Still can't walk without stick.

This morning I had to take the train. At work we have some important clients visiting. I have been told my cycling clothing sometimes smells leaving an unacceptable odour near the door. So I agreed not to cycle in today.  After the slipperiness of Saturday morning. On Friday it rained/sleet before freezing turning the local roads into ice rinks. It took me twice as long as usual walking to the Supermarket. I am glad I did not take the bike. This morning was much better. The pavement to the station was not slippery at all. Should have done a bike/train/bike commute. Less sweaty than the proper ride.

Snow basically.

It wasn't really deep so just brown slush on the roads and the thought of the faff of having to knock the slush off and leaving it exposed at work to start corroding and then riding home and having to give it a clean in the dark didn't really appeal.

Popped my fell shoes on instead and ran in which was nice and enjoyable. Not having to worry about car-pillocks meant that I could spend more time enjoying the snowy landscape and laughing at people in 4x4s not going anywhere because cars.

I tried to commute. Got dressed in cycling clobber. Fitted bags to Orange bike. Fit self to saddle and peddled away from the house. So far quite normal. It is cold and icy bits on the road so I avoid the lane and take the more used roads. I notice that the disc brake is rubbing. It seems to be that on cold mornings recently.  Orange bike is clearly sulking I went on Holiday without it a couple of weeks ago.  I descend Drysgol road then brake hard at the junction of Windsor road.  The back brake locks up completely. I cannot pedal.  So I carry the bike back home. I am so annoyed that I took the train rather than Green bike.

Plagued with an achy hip for the last couple of weeks, which has made sleeping uncomfortable, so walked in to work. "Can I still cycle?" I asked my Physiotherapist son. "No" he said. By some miracle, the pain has diminished this lunchtime, to be almost 'gone'. Will wait and see later on what it's like, and I have been trying hip flexors as son suggested, but something must be happening with the bike set-up or summink.

Not today but yesterday.....

Storm Imogen had been dumping rain all night on the rotting garage doors that we've been suggesting the landlord paints for about 5 years....Leaving the house and really not looking forward to riding into a 30mph headwind in pissing rain....I put the key in the lock and pull the handle....the door won't budge...I pull handle harder and it comes off in my hand....Pulling hard on the key doesn't want to move it and I'm late for work....the rain has swollen the doors and locked them together solidly....

I spend about 5 minutes pondering how I might resolve this, then think sod it, I'll call in and take a holiday....

Had a coffee, Got a few things done, and by the afternoon I'd got into the garage and the weather had improved so went for a nice ride

Bit of a result really

In attempt to have more energy for fun stuff I've decided to try and reduce my number of commutes, the constant cold and wet every day and riding at the weekends seem to have resulted in me getting run down so I caught the cattle car. (Actually about tomorrow, but...)

I had to take an insurance form into the vets' today and the vet who is currently caring for our elderly mog came up to me to apologise that the two samples she'd taken yesterday had been mixed up. The blood one had been sorted but could we get another urine sample.
Sigh. So I'd better drive in tomorrow. There's nowhere to lock a bike at the vets' and I'm not sure I want to be carrying bio-hazards (tom cat!) on the bike anyway.

It was only after I'd got back to work that I remembered I'm also collecting half a sheep and a quarter pig for the freezer tomorrow as well. They'd not quite fit in the pannier.

On Friday, leaving the building already quite late in the evening, I unexpectedly found a flat in the Marathon Plus rear tyre.

After the inevitable faff of changing that, the track pump there was generally buggered (which isn't unusual) and not feeling like pumping the tyre up with the minipump, I used a CO2 cartridge.

<Bang>

At that point, I'd had enough, and went back indoors, washed all the grime off of my hands, got changed, and took the tube and tram home.

So, this morning I have to do the reverse, with several spare tyres, so I should have enough to repair the tyre, after attempting to discern why that last inner tube didn't survive.

It's the first time I've avoided cycling this year, so I don't feel too guilty!

So, after another <Bang> I eventually found a just over 1cm slit in the sidewall.

Luckily I ordered some new tyres yesterday, so they ought to be here tomorrow, or Thursday if I'm unlucky.

I've been driving to work for several weeks as I'm not allowed to ride outside or even pedal for long enough for me to get to work. The public transport alternative would require me to stand up for 1.5hr each way and I can't do that yet, let alone walk the quarter hour needed at each end. I can't imagine how people commute by car every day. It is just horrible, more than three hours a day lost in a metal box.

..but since I left my bike at work... I had to take the dreaded Tube... only 8 stops and each stop was a living hell of bacteria, colds, cough and stinkin' armpits.

after 2 return trips where I got totally soaked, I just did not have the willpower for it today.

I am however, getting very, very comfortable with the scooter, which is not a good thing! Am going to try and ride tomorrow depending on the how much ice I thing we will have

They said Winter Was Coming overnight.

My bridge opened at 07:29 after being closed all day yesterday, and it was +2.

I'm not yet hard enough to shrug off a cold wet commute, especially as I'm still trying to shift a cough which has been around for too long.

I thought I was strong enough to return running with my friends on a Saturday morning. Well, I'm not. My hamstring went 'boing' after half a mile. Limped back to my car. The bike ride I was going to do yesterday never happened, and I didn't leave the house.

Limped into work this morning.

After getting pushed around all over the road last night I decided conditions were such that it qualified as 'ruddy silly', trains seem to be unpredictable and I had the offer of a lift, so gas guzzling dinosaur it was.

Seeing as my Schwalbe Ice Spikers proved rather not up to the task on snow & slush yesterday, I reluctantly drove in today & I sailed through. First time I've been 40 minutes early for this crap job!

It is four month since I managed to commute normally.   I had a very bad cold around Christmas sitting in my throat. So I did not try again until February almost restarted then my crank snapped.  I swapped bikes.  Red bike was not running well so it got me to work :-).  As I set off I noticed the flange of the rear hub had snapped. So I walked it to the station. Green bike had very worn brake pads so I could not use that until I got some new ones.  So I go off on my ski holiday. Two days skiiing then I go shopping.  On the way back I step off the edge of a firm snowy path and my right leg disappeared twisting my left knee.

So for the past few weeks I have been using train and bike.  One or two more weeks and I will be fine (but fat).

Running too late to get the train I wanted in with my bike and the later train I can't be certain of room for bike.

I fair-weathered walked into work this morning. Stayed dryer, and as I put little faith in car drivers nowadays, I doubted their ability to concentrate on a wet Monday morning, with heavy squally wind-blown rain diverting their concentration to manoeuvre their children to school.

On the contrary, your name is now more appropriate than ever; just one metre of commute would be too far!

I'm working tomorrow and may consider the cage given the forecast and total absence of trains all day  ??? but I always feel guilty driving into the city  :-\

Well today is tomorrow and am at work, working would be stretching it. The trains thing is a strike and I'm tired to the point of feeling really low so couldn't face the bike. Mrs S needs the cage, so a lift it was, that's a double dose of guilt and I'm now overdrawn in the brownie point account  :(

I was all set to ride in. Bike washed and lubricated over the weekend. Tyres pumped up. In cycling kit.
First ride since I broke my ankle.
Back tyre has gone flat since Sunday. No time to sort, even if I have the wherewithal.
So a quick shower and I’m back in the car again.  >:(

Absolutely hosing down. Flooded roads bouncing rain. And with my winter bike about to be replaced, I just decided the car would be more comfortable. Slower though.

Yesterday: floods.  Flooding outside my work was front page on the bbc.
...
In hindsight I would still have been better off on the bike.

I got soaked to the skin going home last night and it was pissing down this morning too.  So I took the car of shame this morning, and of course when I left a 45 mins later the rain had eased and its dry now  :(

I saw the forecast for yesterday and did the same, took the car without any guilt though. It was the correct decision due to the wind and horizontal rain, sometimes you just need to do it.

Working from home now, and no longer get the bike out in the morning for the half mile commute. It does go out, but can now avoid the rush-hour/kids-to-school madness. Having said that, this time of year, building up to Christmas it appears the rush-hour twattery is extended throughout much of the day.

Christmas party (and I still feel a bit rough after a cold took a tour of my body at the weekend), so the train for me. Plus it's getting to the time of year to throw in the towel, leastways for later rides home, the roads fill with pissed-up drivers who will have correctly figured by now that the likelihood of being pulled over by the police is close to zero.

It does get to you after a bit.
This is my first week of being on the on-call rota and I dont want to get called when I'm piss wet through on the canal path into a headwind. So I've taken the car all week. Felt a bit of guilt this morning.  If it rains tonight I'll get over it.

........... since being made redundant in 2017 and setting up my own business, I either work from home or am away for days at a time on clients sites = Ickle Car + hotel stay or Biggie Van + kip in the van for the week.

(Although when I did cycle commute, being in South Wales, rain/wind was common (normal) and I got used to getting wet. A ride home without a headwind was something to celebrate!)

I set off this morning but just went round the block as there was frost on the pavements and my ice phobia is strong.
It's not that bad up here on the top of the hill- I was expecting worse.
May get the studs out tomorrow, I'm already super slow so they won't add much time.

Up at commute o’clock and dressed for bike as I didn’t hear any weather.  Went downstairs and looked out and went back upstairs again !    Driving in later, I was quite happy with that decision

Not touched the bike since Saturday  :-[ I have no wish to commute by bike in this weather, every day has had sleet, snow, hail, horizontal rain and a very strong icy wind.

There were patches of ice in my street this morning so the car is being used without guilt.

On Friday...

Feeling like crap - raging sore throat. Decided that with two gut-busting hills in each direction, it would not be a good idea. Annoying as it would have marked 4 weeks of no-car commutes. I have to reset the counter now.  :(

The way I'm feeling, won't be cycling tomorrow either. Bugger.

Monday - too wet and windy
Tuesday - funeral to attend
Wednesday - Health assement requiring no exerise in the previous 12 hours
Thursday - fairly wet and windy, and cba.
Friday - ??

The problem is that the works bus picks me up and drops me off at the end of the drive, costs £2.00 for the week, I get an hour longer in bed and arrive home at the same time as I would had I cycled, and my flexi is mounting.  I fear my resistance to temptation is crumbling, my chain is rusting, and my general good health (as confirmed by the assessment) is about to take a plunge.
